Project 2: Overview

The heart of this course is a project, in which you will design, implement, and evaluate a user interface. User interface design is an iterative process,

so you will build your UI not just once, but three times, as successively higher-delity and more complete prototypes.

This project is the rst step in the user interface design process.  By the end of Project 2 you will have completed the user research, created user

personas, developed wireframes. In Project 3, you will develop a working prototype. In Project 4, you will revisit heuristic analysis and usability

testing on the user interface and experience you designed.

Focus for this project is on user research and wireframes - understanding who the users are, what are they trying to accomplish, how can your

interface design support and delight them. We review several approaches to structuring, performing, and documenting user research, including a

special focus on personas of different types and on use cases. This project provides a walk-through planning and analysis stages for UX/UI projects:

why the planning matters and methods that can be used.

You may choose to design a user interface for any industry. The type of user interface you create is also your choice (i.e. SmartTV, AR, VR,

smartphone, app, website). If you need some ideas to get you started, browse these concepts:

Dementia/Alzheimer’s Home Support

IQS seeks to understand the needs and expectations of individuals with Dementia/Alzheimer’s for in-home support and remote monitoring

for their caregivers. The project also includes a need to develop the designs for the technology to support them.

Library of Congress

The Library of Congress has over 21,000 digitized audio records and 8,500 digitized videos, plus many more records. They needed deep user

research to explore new ways for patrons to discover, acquire, and interact with media.

Montgomery County Parks

Montgomery County Parks consists of 422 parks and they work to provide an enjoyable park system that promotes community. Park

systems want ways to increase user engagement, especially with the millennials by leveraging smartphones.

A Visual 4GL Knowledge Graph

Stardog Union integrates their client’s data through knowledge graphs (KG). The KG creation process requires expertise and the ability to

code in multiple languages and increases the barrier of entry to learning and using this technology. The client wanted us to design a visual

user interface that simplies the current KG creation process for users with limited technological expertise and skills.

Medical Teaching Hospital

The client wants us to create a virtual space where students can perform surgeries and see surgical demonstrations. They want the students

to be able to interact in virtual space including a virtual classroom with hands-on 3D models

Learning Objectives Upon completion of Project 2, you will be able to:

Software Requirements

To complete this project, you will use:

Microsoft Word or PowerPoint

Wireframing application, such as Azure, Figma, InVision, Illustrator, or Adobe XD

to be able to interact in virtual space, including a virtual classroom with hands on 3D models.

Clothing Company

An undisclosed clothing company has come to you to design an experience for their customers. They will like their customers to be able to

see what clothing would look like on them.

Explain how a storyboard can be used to help with user interface design.1. Apply guidelines in user interface design.2. Apply the user-centered design process in the creation of storyboards and user interface.3.
