As a System Administrator for a global company with over 10,000+ employees has

taught many things about what my passions is in my career. Even though I have not worked for

this company very long I have had the opportunity to be exposed to many new things. One of

them being cloud computing, which is one of the reasons that I am a pursuing this graduate

program. Cloud computing is fairly new to businesses and there are vast amounts of

opportunities for people who have a passion for technology and business. Having said that this

passion to learn everything about this field is fairly because of my, what I would my irregular,

career path that I took.

2008 was not an ideal year to graduate high school or college for that matter because of

the global financial crisis. My parents both had lost their blue collar jobs and were not able to

help me pay for college so I decided to join the Marines and serve my country. Fast forward four

years later and multiple deployments I found myself once again trying to figure out what my

career path will be. An opportunity came up to move to western Pennsylvania and work in the oil

and gas industry. Almost immediately after I began working here I knew that this was not what I

wanted to be my career but the money was great. Once the energy sector drastically dropped off

in 2015 and an opportunity came up to go back to school and earn my degree and finally follow

something that I was passionate for, IT.

While in college I had great luck by being able to find a full-time job before graduating

with my bachelor’s degree. I began my career as most It professionals do, my answering phone

calls on the help desk. Even though I was in the field that I wanted to be in I did not have a

passion for the service desk. Within a year I was able to move to the infrastructure and network

department where I began to really understand what in IT I was passionate about. Since the first

company I worked for was a small energy company with no more than a few hundred employees,

I wore many hats and had a chance to have my hands in many different things. One of them

being a transition from a traditional physical datacenter to Amazon Web Services.

One of the reasons I recruited by current employer is because what I learned in

transitioning to AWS. Just like a new technology, cloud services are constantly changing which

is one of the reasons why I love my career. It requires that I continually learn new things and

every day that I go into work I experience something different. In addition to the constant

challenges, the virtual community that has sprout from people all over the world is amazing. No

matter what you are doing if you run into any problems or have any questions on how to do

something you can reach out to this community via social media and/or forums and within

minutes you will have answers.
