HUMN 351 7381 Myth in the World.

Introduction

In the first paper project, you will examine a myth of your choice and write a paper. This is a staged assignment in three parts. These stages are:

· STAGE 1: Choose your Myth

· STAGE 2: Archetypal Roles & Non-Material Culture

· STAGE 3: Interpreting Myth

PROJECT 1 STAGE 1: Choose your Myth

This week you will choose an origin myth not covered in our Learning Materials. It can be an origin myth, broadly construed. That means that the myth can be the creation of the world, or the origin of a feature of the world, or even the origin of a particular community or country.

In a short essay of 200-250 words, please do the following:

1. Very briefly summarize your chosen myth and identify two of its main characters. Be sure to specify which version of the myth you will use if there are multiple versions.

2. Identify the culture this myth comes from.

3. Identify the category(s) of creation myth for your chosen myth.

4. Explain briefly why this myth interests you.

5. Provide a citation in MLA format for the source of your myth.

Use a credible, scholarly source for your myth.

PROJECT 1 STAGE 2: Archetypal Roles & Nonmaterial Culture

Instructions

For Stage 2 of your paper, you will address what archetypal roles are present in the myth you chose in Stage 1 and identify the elements of nonmaterial culture you think are addressed by the myth. Review the  Project 1 - Full Description  before you begin, and be concise with your explanations and focus on gathering your ideas and resources.

In a 350-550 word essay, please do the following:

1. List one or two of the major characters in the myth and match them to their archetypal roles.

2. Briefly identify what nonmaterial culture (beliefs, values, norms, or customs and traditions etc.) you think these archetypes and the storyline represent from the myth's culture and briefly explain why.

3. Identify one theorist's approach not related to the archetypes that you could use to discuss the relationship between the myth and the nonmaterial culture and briefly explain how it applies. Examples of these theoretical approaches can be found in week 1's Required Learning Materials (Frazer, Jung, Bell, Durkheim, Levi-Strauss etc.).

4. List three credible, scholarly sources that will help you explain the meaning of this myth and its major figures have in the culture or society where this myth comes from. Make sure to use reliable, scholarly sources and cite these appropriately.

5. Provide a brief annotation (1 sentence) for each scholarly source, noting how it will help you with this paper. For example: “This resource will help me understand Maori culture.”

PROJECT 1 STAGE 3: Interpreting Myth Paper

At this point you will combine the work you have done in stages 1 and 2 into a complete paper offering an interpretation of the myth you chose.

Write a 1000-1250 word essay that includes the following:

1. A brief summary of the myth

2. A description of the cultural context of the myth

3. A description of the archetypes seen in this myth and an explanation of how they can apply to nonmaterial culture (beliefs, values, norms, or customs and traditions etc.) and gender and/or societal roles in myth's culture

4. An analysis of the meaning of the myth in that culture that uses a theoretical approach to shows how the myth relates to specific element(s) of non-material culture in terms of the moral, political, social, economic, scientific, or proto-scientific message it contains.

5. A conclusion

6. A reference list in MLA format
