Group Presentation Assignment

Objectives

Students will:

Examine an ethical issue in counseling and present this issue to colleagues

Identify and explain different sides of one ethical issue

(dilemmas, controversies and tensions from different interpretations and perspectives)

Identify impact of systems, cultures, and other forces that may affect the counseling process (i.e., accessibility to resources, ableism, poverty, racism, classism, homophobia)

Identify current policy and law regarding the ethical issue

Utilize relevant practice, values and ethics literature as well as research to critically examine a counseling practice issue

Participate in the negotiation, creativity and role identification required to complete a group task

Format:

Each group will have 30 minutes for the presentation

The following is a suggested timetable for the presentation:

5 min Introduction and background of ethical issue

Current impact on counseling practice

Supporting statistics

20 min Current law, policy, political/social interest as well as public opinion

regarding the ethical issue and their impact on counseling

Systems, institutions, and forces involved dealing with the ethical issue

as a counselor

Ethics, principles and values related to the ethical issue

Recent ethical dilemmas regarding the ethical issues and the outcome after resolution

5 min Conclusion, Q & A

Present ethical dilemma to class

Requirements:

1. Outline of presentation (to be reviewed by the instructor and the group at least one week prior to the presentation)

2. Bibliography on topic (APA format)

3. Any handouts

4. Annotated bibliography of five references (from each group member)

Notes: #2-4 due prior to the presentation

Copies and overheads may be provided by the instructor with one week notice

Grading:

Each group will be evaluated based upon the following:

Adherence to objectives__ 30 pts

Outline & Bibliography__ 15 pts

Annotated Bibliography__ 30 pts (at least four peer-reviewed and/or primary scholarly resources)

Presentation style ___ 25 pts

(communicating information, engaging the class, organization, time management)

Annotated Bibliography:

1 page per source

Cite source (APA style)

Summary (1-2 paragraphs)

Reaction and critique (1-2 paragraphs)

Questions about the article and questions for further inquiry
