HOW TO CREATE A PROFILE OF SCORES USING EXCEL AND WORD. Open up an Excel Worksheet. Along the top, type the headers for the 5 factors of the IPIP. In the row below,

type your 5 standardised (T) scores. Do them in the opposite order to how you want them to display. Here,

Extraversion will appear first.

Navigate to the INSERT tab. Highlight Factors and scores and choose a horizontal bar chart.

Highlight chart. Go to the DESIGN tab, and you should see that your chart is Layout 1 – simple layout. You

can choose a different layout if you prefer, but best to keep the background WHITE as you’ll see later.

Type a title for the chart – with YOUR NAME, of course! SAVE your Workbook!! You can also change the

colours of your bars, using the fill menu on the HOME tab.

Right-click on the bottom axis numbers on the chart, and select FORMAT AXIS

Change ‘Vertical axis crosses’ from Automatic to ‘Axis Value’ – and choose 50.

You also need to change the MAJOR

Units to 5, instead of 20.

Now your profile will be shown with 50 as the mean.

You can clearly see where you have scored above or below the mean.

Highlight the vertical access with the labels

On the Axis interface, expand ‘LABELS’ and then you can opt to change ‘LABEL POSITION’

Here I have changed the label position to ‘HIGH’ and the labels now appear to the right of the chart.

Remember the AVERAGE is a range - 45-55. We need to show this on the chart.

Using the INSERT tab, select SHAPES and draw a rectangle on the chart, using the 40 – 60 range

You can change the colour and weight of the line to GREEN. This is the broad average range. Now insert

another rectangle, between 45-55. This can be RED and will be the Average/Average range.

You can also change the size of the text.

Now you have a graph that you can copy and paste into your report. Check when you do that the boxes that

mark your ranges are in the right place – they sometimes move when copying. You can adjust them in your

WORD document.

To understand the profile, your client needs look at how far each factor bar extends. If it ends within the red

square = average range of scores.

Between red and green lines = high average or low average scores.

Outside the green and red areas = high or low scores.

You will need to explain to the reader what the graph means, in sentence form, along with the graph.

Now do the same thing with your Emotional Intelligence scores!
