Yoanka-Although some of us in executive leadership positions have been away from the bedside for a while, it is important to connect with employees. As you emphasized-it is all about relationship building. One thing my CNO and I did when we were assigned an additional hospital to over see nursing practice was to "walk in a nurses shoe" We divided up the units-and wore scrubs and worked side by side with the nurses to get a clearer picture of all they are dealing with in the clinical setting. I felt I had more of a sense of clinical practice as up to about a year ago I was still practicing (moonlighting) on an in-pt unit in a behavioral health/medical unit. Leaders are challenged to connect with employees-and its a smart first step! Mutual respect is critical.
