WEEK SIX INSTRUCTOR GUIDANCE
Welcome to the last week of class! Throughout the course you have practiced skills and applied knowledge in ways that a special education professional does in real-world public school settings. This week you continue preparing for professional practice as you provide the recommendations for the Comprehensive Evaluation Report and create instructional recommendations based upon data collection about Manuel. Additionally, you will apply everything you have learned regarding assessment and evaluation in special education as you prepare a formal presentation for the final project.
By the end of this week you will be able to (a) describe the components of a Comprehensive Evaluation Report that guides the planning and development of the Individualized Education Program, and (b) create instructional recommendations based upon data collection.
Week Six Assignment Guidance
As you come to the end of the initial phases of the assessment and evaluation process with Manuel, you are asked to do a workshop on the processes of assessment and evaluation and assessment for students with mild to moderate disabilities. You decide to use the case of Manuel to illustrate the process and will create a Powerpoint with speaker's notes for your presentation. This Powerpoint can be used as a presentation template for your professional career and will provide you with a valuable resource for your ePortfolio. It can also support you in preparing for the Capstone course, the final class required to complete the Masters of Arts in Special Education program.
There is an art and a science to creating effective presentations (Dunning, 2006). For example, with a Powerpoint Presentation you should use at least 30 point sans serif font for the body of your slide and at least 48 point fond, sans serif, for the titles. This article by Anne E. Dunning has some good tips for creating a powerful presentation. Just click on the link for the entire article.
One additional resource that may be of assistance as you prepare your presentation comes from a TED blog! Click on the link below to see how you can make your slides as interesting as those on the Ted Talks.
As you can see, there is a lot that goes into creating powerful and thought-provoking presentations.
And finally, one final suggestion, if you find that you are terrified at the thought of public speaking. See if you can find a Toastmaster's club in your area and join! As a member of the toastmaster's you will gain invaluable experience in public speaking. Click on the link below to access the Toastmaster's Website and find a location close to you.
As a final reminder in wrapping up ESE610, the MASE program provides the opportunity to create an online portfolio that can be used in your professional practice and also in the final Capstone course, ESE699. You may select this assignment and subsequent coursework to include as artifacts. Therefore, it is strongly encouraged you save your coursework on a flash-drive (e.g., a USB removable drive) or store in a cloud-based option such as Dropbox, GoogleDrive, or other similar applications.
