Interview a Professional

On Tuesday, XXXX I interviewed a friend’s financial planner. XXXXX works at XXXXX in St. Cloud, MN and graduated with a degree in Finance from University of Minnesota-Duluth in 20XX. XXXXX became interested in finance while he was in high school. His family has always struggled with managing their money, so he wanted to learn more about how to become better at that. He really loves working with people which is why he was interested in becoming a financial planner.

During school, XXXXX said that the most valuable skills he learned were balancing, stock valuation, communication skills, and financial policies. He really enjoyed his money and banking class along with ASL (American Sign Language), which was his minor. He wished that he would have been taught Excel more in-depth during school. Although his college didn’t focus on that, his company trains its employees on any programming that is required.

As a financial planner, the day-to-day activities are different every day. He usually starts by organizing his schedule, adjusting budgets, and making/taking phone calls from clients. The afternoon is filled with meetings with clients and talking with coworkers about improvements. Being a financial representative involves a lot of interpersonal skills while also being able to calculate important numbers. Building rapport with the customers is XXXXX’s favorite part of the job. Not getting call backs is the downside of the job.

Since XXXXX just graduated last spring, he has gone through the process of starting the career search. He got his foot in the door by landing an internship at XXXXX and then the company offered him a job after graduation. As a senior about to graduate with a finance degree, I asked him for advice. He said it can be very important to get an internship in order to help you figure out what you’re interested in. For this industry, he said that it is also very important to be organized and to know how to network.

I believe that talking to a professional in my intended career was a very helpful project. It was good to hear how important communication skills really are in the workplace and that most companies do extensive training for their employees. After talking to XXXXX, I have become much more interested in the financial planning area of finance. I also have become much more interested in this field from this interview and I thought it was super fun being the one asking the questions this time!
