Introduction
Family Dollar is an American business organization that deals with a wide variety of products such as clothing, beauty products, home decor, and cleaning supplies among other products. The company has 8000 locations across the United States in different states. Despite its remarkable size, Family Dollar is faced with a variety of challenges that have significantly affected its productivity. One of the significant problems is lack of employee motivation due to long working hours, sick pay, and poor working conditions among other challenges.
1. EI and Motivation
EI Building Blocks
One of the building blocks, in this case, is empathy (Cascio, 2018). This is the ability to understand the emotional reactions of another person. This will assist the managers to understand the employees and make necessary changes that will improve their emotional responses. With the positive emotions, the employees will boost the performance and will also be satisfied with their jobs. Social skills also form a significant part of emotional intelligence building blocks. This enables a leader to interact with employees and build strong interpersonal skills effectively. This building block can be utilized to improved interaction between employees such as to make them comfortable with each other. This will also make them satisfied and motivated.
Positive and negative reinforcement
Positive reinforcement includes praising team members for exceptional performance. This can be utilized by ensuring that the excellent achievement is maintained to improve the overall productivity of the team in general. Negative reinforcement involves issues such as demoting employees because of the poor performance. This can be utilized by working hard to achieve duties and responsibilities to obtain promotion once again. Regardless of the nature of the enforcement, different strategies can be used to get the best out of it.
2. EI and Social Skills and Decision-Making
Core concepts of emotional intelligence
One of the core concepts is self-awareness. This enables an individual to understand their mood as well as motivation and how they can affect others (Cascio, 2018). Self-awareness is attributed to confidence, a sense of humor, and the ability to understand that an individual can affect others. This is a concept that can improve a person's social skills as they can relate better to others. As a result of this, they can make better decisions because they understand that whatever they do has an impact on other people too.
Another core concept of emotional intelligence is self-regulation. This primarily refers to the ability to control personal impulses. Instead of making quick decisions that might be regretted later, an individual with self-regulation can precisely analyze a situation before finally making a decision. Self-regulation enables a person to understand others in a better manner, and this allows them to behave appropriately to have a positive impact on them. This concept also is relevant to decision making as it enables an individual to think through a situation and make an informed decision.
Emotional intelligence is also characterized by internal motivation. This is a concept that enables an individual to have a public push that allows them to behave at work appropriately. In an organizational setup, internal motivation improves the relationship between an employee and the manager. Due to self-motivation, did not find themselves on the wrong side frequently.
3. Effective Teams
Core attributes of a competent team
One of the core attributes of a qualified organization is the unity of purpose. It is noted that a typical organization has different members that are assigned to a variety of duties and responsibilities but at the end of it, they need to achieve the same target. Keeping this in mind, for a team to be competent, all the members must work towards the same purpose (Pinder, 2014). It is the responsibility of the team leader to communicate to the rest of the members the purpose for which the team is established. This enables it to stay focused thereby increasing the chances of achieving its objective. Secondly, a capable team must have healthy interpersonal relationships. Bearing in mind that a team has different members that must work together, it is crucial for them to maintain a healthy relationship to coordinate and corporate to work together as one unit.
Strategies for developing team dynamics
One of the policies to implement at Family Dollar is effective communication among teams. This strategy will ensure that the purpose of the group is efficiently communicated to all members that by unifying them by the same use. Effective communication will also increase understanding in the organization. Another strategy to be utilized is concerning focusing on building strong interpersonal skills, especially for the team members. This is a strategy that will ensure the members realize the importance of each other. This will improve the relationships on a personal level and in the end, the organization will also benefit from increased productivity.
4. Reward Systems
The road system at Family Dollar is intended to boost employee motivation as well as performance. A practical road system should be able to improve the overall productivity of the employees as well as the organization in general. In this case, the rod system will also play a significant role in influencing the behavior of the employees especially by encouraging them to do the best to achieve the various duties and responsibilities that have been assigned to them. The reward system will take into consideration the following aspects.
· Compensation
· Appreciation
With such a reward system at Family Dollar, employees will be able to develop positive behavior that will increase the organizational productivity.
Specific strategies
As far as compensation is concerned, the particular procedure will involve rewarding employees for every hour worked (Bratton & Gold, 2017). This implies that employees will be compensated for the extra time, so that did not feel overworked. In addition to this, the road system will ensure that the employee payment is proportional to the amount of work done.
The strategies in appreciation will involve recognizing outstanding employees for the exemplary performance. A combination of these strategies will make sure that the employees are motivated efficiently. This is a booster to the organization's productivity in general.
5. Executive Summary
It is essential for the management team to have emotional intelligence. You have to understand the different blocks of this concept and how to apply them in the organizational set-up to improve employee productivity as well as the overall performance of the organization. Building blocks such as empathy will enable the leaders and managers to check the welfare of the employees into consideration. This will allow them to create better relationships that will motivate the employees to do their best so that they can achieve the various duties and responsibilities that have been assigned to them. The management of Family Dollar should primarily apply multiple concepts and building blocks of emotional intelligence to get the best out of the employees.
Social skills are also essential especially in a team scenario because it involves different people working together. With such capabilities, team members will efficiently relate to one another understanding that they need each other’s support. They will also make better decisions that are beneficial to an individual as well as organizational level. This will lead to the development of capable teams as members will be brought together by unity of purpose. Communication strategies also affect the manner in which groups operate.
Lastly, employees should be motivated efficiently for them to do their best. One of the ways to achieve this is by implementing an effective rewards system that will make sure each employee is compensated for the effort they provide in an organization. The employees should also be appreciated for each hour they work as this will motivate them and boost the overall performance.
