Business networking is no different to personal networking like Facebook or Twitter in that its purpose it to connect with like-minded individuals and to openly discuss issues or areas of interest.
There are also well established groups and networks for business people like Rotary, Lions, etc, but the effort of having to meet face to face and on a regular basis is very unappealing to the young and modern manager.
Costs
Many business people contend that business networking is a more cost-effective method of generating new business than advertising or public relations efforts. This is because business networking is a low-cost activity that involves more personal commitment than company money.
Access
Computer access and open source information activity achieves the same outcome using online groups of like-minded businesspeople who recognise, create and act upon business opportunities together or individually. The action or end result is still a company decision.
Company / internal – do they embrace networking and do they promote within the company professional association membership? Almost every company providing goods or services has a professional body that meet at least annually and have training or other networking facilities for members.
Customers will often share networking experiences and provide access to groups. Especially if customers are purchasing goods and services of a nature that lean toward sporting, social, active and outgoing activities.
Media and promotional – many media outlets embrace cooperative networking in their field so that they too benefit from what the advertiser is achieving or not. Look to media frequently for opportunities to participate in forums, conferences, focus groups, study groups etc.
Professional – there are a host of web sites like LinkedIn who are designed to network and collaborate with other professionals.
