Final Project Treatment: Scare-apy

Logline – Garret Ricker:

After the U.S. supreme court bans medications that help people struggling with anxiety and depression, a group of individuals are sent to a facility where their biggest fears are used to cure them of their illness, but at what cost?

Introduction to Key Characters – Garret Ricker:

Jax (Bradley Cooper), late 20’s, an all-American boy raised in a rural town finds himself struggling with anxiety after receiving his dream job in corporate America. He has a fear of spiders and deep murky waters. He’s married and has one daughter. His wife introduces him to the idea of “scare-apy” after hearing about it from a local church –goer.

Sandra (Lupita Nyong'o), early 30’s is a Politician and well-known feminist activist. After losing an election to senate to a conservative republican she becomes depressed as she feels that she has let down the females of America. She has a fear of failure and of strange textures. She is single, as she devotes most of her time to her career. She finds a letter on her doorstep introducing her to “scare-apy,” little does she know, it’s from the man who stole her chair as senate.

Maria (Diana Silvers), late 20’s, is a single mother living paycheck to paycheck. She had a child in high school and decided to keep it. She’s a nursing student and hopes to one day go to medical school to support her son. She has fallen under the pressures of everyday life and even marijuana can’t cure her anxiety. She has a fear of needles and letting her son down. Her boss tells her about the new,“scare-apy.”

Josh (Dan Levy), late 20’s, the son of the man who stole Sandra’s chair as senate is an ordinary boy who plays the part for his powerful republican father. But he’s got a big secret, he’s gay. He has a fear of his parents, God, and heights. Trapped between supporting his father and being himself, he discovers the flyer his dad has in his bag for “scare-apy” where “fear will set you free,” and decides to give it a shot, without his father knowing.

Dan (Ross Butler), late 20’s, is a 5-star chef in Los Angeles, who was born and raised in China. He is having troubles finding his niche in the U.S. His father went to prison for life for murdering his mother when he was an only child. He has a fear of abandonment, and his father. A regular tells him about “scare-apy.”

Why We Chose These Actors – Garret Ricker:

Bradley Cooper is an immensely talented, well-rounded actor. He has reached stardom through some of the world’s biggest films such as, American Sniper, A Star is Born, and American Hustle. He has shown diversity throughout all his characters and has that star quality about him. He was in a few horror movies, Case 39, and The Midnight Meat Train, both of which had fair standings with critics and viewers alike. He has proved that he can do comedy, action, and horror very well.

Lupita Nyong'o is incredibly talented and has shown wide range through her films like Black Panther, 12 Years a Slave, and US. Her performance in Jordan Peele’s horror “US” was so riveting and compared to the likes of the mother from The Exorcist. For this reason, she would be a great addition to the “Scare-apy” cast.

Diana Silvers is a new face to Hollywood, but has showed immense talent in her latest hits, Glass, Book Smart, and MA. She’s young, fresh, and very popular now.

Dan Levy is mostly known for his comedic writing and acting in the show Schitt’s Creek, and Modern Family. He’s one of the hottest and most talked about gay men on the internet currently. His talents could greatly benefit the marketing and comedic relief of the film.

Ross Butler is mostly known for his work on 13 Reasons Why, one of Netflix’s most popular shows. But he has been in multiple films including Shazam! He is ranked the 6th hottest Asian-American Actor now and has potential to market to his fan base, bringing on more revenue.

Film we Chose as Comparison: IT: CHAPTER 1

IT follows a group of teens that are being haunted and stalked by Pennywise the dancing clown. He turns into their biggest fears, and no one can see him except children. Also, no one believes them whenever they ask adults for help. We chose this film because it is similar that these characters will also have to overcome their biggest fears to defeat this child murderer. And through that, they find themselves and grow up. IT quickly became the highest grossing horror film of all time and we think giving a similar plot line, with adults, centered around metal illness, and an A-list cast could push our film to be one of the highest grossing suspense films of all time. We want to get the producers of IT and the Conjuring Universe on board, along with Warner Bros Studios, and director/writer of IT Andy Muschietti. Our intended audience is for lovers of horror/suspense ranging from 17-40, all demographics in all parts of the world.

Act 1 – Garret Ricker:

2035, Los Angeles, a rally debate is taking place. The crowd is going wild, but nothing crazy. Everyone is sporting blue shirts that shout “Gold 2035!” An African American woman, Sandra, late 30’s is standing on the podium, she has just finished her speech, the crowd goes wild. We pull in closer to her face, she admires the crowd for a moment.

We are now in her home; the lights are low. Nice, newly remodeled with a view of DTLA. She’s smoking and has a scotch in the other hand. Tears stream from her eyes, before a sudden “KNOCK KNOCK!” When she opens the door, she picks up a flyer that’s laying on the ground in front of her door.

A large office building, a room full of men and women are circled around a table. Someone as the head of the table is talking and pointing to a board full of graphs and numbers. Jax, late 20’s is staring at a bug crawling on the desk, someone suddenly smashes it. Jax comes out of his peaceful state and returns his attention to the man speaking.

Later at home he’s in the kitchen washing the dishes, his wife hugs him from behind and a young girl runs behind them. His wife chases after her yelling something about a bed time. Jax wipes his hands dry and turns to see a flyer on his fridge, he takes a closer look.

A University class room, a few students are asleep, and others are closely taking notes. One student blows smoke from his vape, coughing and waving away the smoke is Maria, mid 20’s. She takes a sip of her water right before an alarm goes off on her phone, she quickly throws her books into her bag and runs out of class.

A daycare, quiet and nicely decorated. Maria picks up a young boy and puts him into his car seat. The baby begins to cry when she starts to drive. She tries to comfort him, but he isn’t having it and his cries only grow louder. She pulls over and lays her head on the steering wheel next to a pile of past due assignments while the child's cries get louder. Maria suddenly see a flyer on her windshield.

A dark, very nice bedroom. Two men are making out on the bed, one is Josh, late 20’s. There’s suddenly a creek outside of the room. Josh panics and shoves the other man into his closet. An older man pushes open the door wearing a red shirt that yells “Roberts 2035!” He runs and hugs Josh and yells something about how he won the election and he couldn’t have done it without his son, Josh. Josh forces a smile.

Later in the kitchen Josh sits next to his two parents as they gobble down a roast. Josh pretends to pay attention to the conversation but seems to have something else on his mind. A time lapse happens, and his parents are gone, and he’s sitting in front of his empty plate alone. He sees a white flyer sticking out of his dad's bag by the fridge. He walks over and pulls it out.

A busy kitchen in a fancy restaurant in Los Angeles. Dan, a Chinese man in his late 20’s is chopping vegetables. The speed of the knife becomes so fast, before he cuts his arm off. He shakes his head to reveal that it was only his imagination. Someone from the back shouts for an ETA on the lobster bisque. Dan goes back to prepping food.

Later Dan is sitting at a bar. He has a full beer and a few empty bottles in front of him. He’s talking to someone sitting next to him, but he seems distant and a little sad. The person next to him leaves. Dan calls for another beer when he notices a flyer next to him where the stranger was sitting. He picks it up and reads the title: SCARE-APY.

Act 2 – Takeyuki Oshima:

The next scene zooms to a tranquil environment, where there are fountains and fish tanks in the background. It exudes an atmosphere of extreme comfort, which provides an essential setting for the event taking place. Five individuals are shown sitting in comfortable seats each appearing tense as a male counselor speaks with them. As the camera focuses on each of these individuals, it becomes clear that they are the ones that were shown in the previous act. The counselor asks them to introduce themselves and why they have come for the scare-apy session. the African American woman, who seems to be the most assertive of the group, begins.

Sandra is unable to cope with the massive loss that she suffered at the hands of her rival. She feels that she did not do enough to make sure that she achieved the victory that not only she, but also all women in the state and country deserved. She has been unable to sleep for days and has been suffering from anxiety attacks since her rival was declared the winner. Sandra feels that she has the ability to achieve more but she is being prevented to move on because of the fear that she might lose again. She has never lost in her life, and in fact, her life has been a success. This last election was her first real loss in life and it has had such a negative effect on her that her fear of failure has made her become averse to moving on.

Josh goes next and states that he is an individual that has been struggling with the considerable pressure of being the son of a renowned politician. He considers himself to constantly being forced to be someone he is not and the support that he gives to his father is given not because he really wants to, but because of obligation. This situation has become extremely difficult for him over the past few months, especially when it comes to the manner through which he has had to keep his being gay a secret for so long. As the son of a conservative politician, it would not be a great image if the latter had a gay son; resulting in Josh keeping his sexual orientation a secret for the sake of supporting his father’s career. His biggest fear is that his father would end up disowning him if he found out the truth.

Jax introduces himself next and declares that his is the life that he has dreamed of since he was in his early teenage years. However, in recent months, he has been finding it extremely difficult to cope with, especially when it comes to the long hours that he has to work. Furthermore, he finds that he no longer derives satisfaction from his work to an extent that he has been contemplating the prospect of leaving and starting out on his own. However, his concern for his wife and daughter, and the standard of living that he has made them used to makes him hold back. He really wishes that he could just wipe the slate clean and start life afresh without the fears that plague him. For months now, he has had a recurring dream of being attacked by numerous spiders and he runs into deep murky pool, where, rather than being saved, he encounters and a dark giant spider, which pulls him into the depths. He always wakes up screaming because he has had a fear of spiders and deep murky waters since he was a child.

Maria, who seems to be the most visible nervous of the group, suddenly speaks up, interrupting Jax. She states that everyone in the room know nothing about fear. Crying, she declares that she has been living with the fear of failing her son since she had him in high school. Moreover, she has had to make so many sacrifices on his behalf since then, but despite all that she does, it seems that it is not enough because she cannot provide all the support and presence that her son needs. She has had to take on a number of jobs while also going to school because it is the best way through which she can achieve her goal of becoming a nurse. Despite all of these actions, she is increasingly feeling overwhelmed and because of this, she fears that she will not be able to cope with the burden of raising her son alone, and providing him with the life he deserves. After this outburst, she hugs her knees and sobs, much to the astonishment of the entire group. The counselor hands her a tissue and tells her that it will all be fine because they are all at the scare-apy in order to overcome their worst fears and regain the confidence to cope with life.

Dan is not only the calmest member of the group, but also the most distant. He seems to have spaced out most of the time and may not have been listening to the stories that the others were telling about themselves. He has always been a loner and since his father went to prison for life after killing his mother, he was raised by an old uncle, who had catered for his every need yet had not filled the void of a mother in his life. He has not been able to develop strong relationships with individuals outside of his immediate family and this has caused him not to have any interest in ever settling down. His fear is that he will eventually end up being like his father if he gets into a relationship. Moreover, he is plagued with feelings of abandonment because of the fact that neither of his parents was present as he was growing up and he has come to believe that he is cursed because of it. The fact that his father murdered his mother has played a critical role in making sure that he develops an aversion to getting too close to people, and this has been seen through his fear of being abandoned. Also, Dan is an individual that has been greatly traumatized by the actions of his father, to an extent that since childhood, he was in constant fear that his father would come for him next. He has also developed the character of seeking to please everyone, and this began in his childhood, when he witnessed his friends living happily with their parents while he had no one in his life other than his aged uncle. His need to please has often been a disadvantage for him because other people have sought to take advantage of him along the way while giving him nothing in return other than abandonment.

Once all the individuals in the group have introduced themselves, the counselor orients them with the scare-apy process, which involves the use of a drug that essentially enables the users to experience their worst fears. It triggers the brain to focus only on their fears, with the result being that the only way individuals can come out of the situation is through confronting these fears and overcoming them. The confrontation process is one that involves the counselor’s guidance, who continues with his role as therapist during scare-apy session. Through the guidance of the counselor, the individual is taken through his or her fears to the original cause of the latter. By recognizing and confronting the origins of their fears, they are able to achieve the goal of overcoming them and returning to normality.

The counselor leads his clients to another room, where five beds with heart monitors beside them are located. Once the clients have been secured in place using straps, they are injected with the scare-apy drug, and the process begins. The scare-apy participants begin sinking into their own fears, each initially beginning with an initial scream which then subsides. The scene ends with the counselor, who, with a knowing smile, calmly watches the twitching bodies of his clients as they begin to experience their worst nightmares.
