Abstract

The aim of this research is to come up with a product that helps beach users to keep their belongings safe against stealing, damaging or loss. The type, use and materials of this product were chosen after doing a market research, and studying the users’ needs through mixed methods. The data of this research was gathered through a qualitative survey with questions to address what kind of product does a user lack at the beach, a quantitative open questions interview to address the issues that needs to be solved whenever using the beach. And an observation of the beach users’ behavior. Results showed that, beach users mostly face problems that are related to having a safe place to keep their valuables against water, heat of the sun or against stealing. Hence, the chosen product that will be designed and developed is related to security and safety.

This chapter will first discuss the general idea of the project then it will cover the main elements of product design research project which are

Will discuss the laws of the electrical products that are related to the research to know more at the design phase what the limitations of each part in the product are.

Saudi Arabia is the largest Country in the Middle East, and seas from two sides surround it. One of them is the red sea, which considers a very important sea in the world. Many public beach projects are being executed in it, to contribute with the tourism prosperity in the kingdom in line with the 2030 Vision.

People love visiting the beach for many different reasons, such as to relax, watch the sunrise and sunsets, enjoy the weather, walking and playing or simply enjoy themselves under the sun.

However, a trip to the beach isn’t complete without carrying belongings, which differs whether it is for swimming reasons or enjoying the time on seaside recreational areas. Folding chairs, umbrellas, sunblock, beach toys, towels, mobiles, headphones, beach bags, and sunglasses are some common examples of what people usually carry whenever visiting the beach.

Jeddah is a coastal city, that known as “Bride of the Red Sea”. People go to the Corniche or to the

beach almost every weekend and on vacations, whether for swimming or enjoying the view.

While visiting the beach, people carry valuable stuff with them that needs to be safe from

stealing, the sun’s heat or against the water. And such a service rarely or almost doesn’t exist in public beaches. Hence, designing a product that serves this specific need is a must, especially for beach/outdoor amateur’s to make their journey easy and fun.

One of the newest Saudi Arabia’s projects is turning a huge part of the Red Sea coastline into a global tourism destination. Which means, hundreds or maybe thousands of local and international visitors will be using Saudi public beaches. This opens up a large market for new beach products to be created, innovated and developed in order to improve the beach users’ experience.

This research helped finding out the market’s new trends, understand people’s needs and helped defining the type of product that will be chosen to be developed and innovated. The product that was chosen goes under the area of security. The product will be designed to enhance the user’s experience at the beach making it comfortable and enjoyable one without worrying about where to put our valuables. The product will be for both genders male and female. It will focus on the security of the beach user’s belongings and how the user will interact with the product, and how the product will make the user comfortable while using it.

Recently many public beaches and waterfront projects are being developed around Saudi. This will opens up a huge market for developing such products, moreover, this will attract a large number of visitors ranging between locals and tourists. Which means large number of users in one place. This will create the issue of losing valuables and belongings due to lack of safe places around pubic areas and beaches.

On other hand, whenever People go to the beach, the idea of planning what things to carry with them and always worry where to keep them. However, carrying personal items such as mobile phones, money, IDs, books, laptops etc. are susceptible to get ruined by the sun’s heat, sand or sea water. Hence, suitable secure product that is water proof and sand proof is needed.

1.3 Project vision and objectives:

Since it’s an outdoor beach Item, I aim to make use of the natural resources to be included in manufacturing or/and operating my product. This will open up the opportunity to make an organic product the potential product would be waterproof, sand proof and durable to the heat. It can also include a storage for personal items, and other features that ease and enhance the users’ experience at the beach.

Market research is an important element in product design project research because it is showing what the market already have and what are the features of these products so the designer know a general idea of what has been done already.

1.5 Quantitative (survey analysis)

This section will show and analays an online survey that has been done according to 85 candidates with 8 questions that are ranged between different ages and different genders. It will show the analysis of each question and what has been conducted from this survey. By showing diagrams and percentages. This method will help to understand more users needs. And will help the designer to know more what product will fit the needs of the users.

Based on statics it showed that 36% of the users are ranged between 26-31 and also closely to the percantage of category between 20-25 years old. Which means that the product is going to be

used by . So the colors scheme should be approperate to their age. And it will be minimalsit so they can understand it very well. Without having any compixity.

According to the results of this question it is shown that the majorety of the audience are males, with 52% responds. Moreover it showed that female’s respondants are really close also. So the product’s design is going to be suitable for both genders. Due to the materials, colors and style.

According to the statics, 49% of the candidates are not usually goes to the beach. Because there are no varaities of public beaches at this moment. but in the future regarding to the vision of 2030 there will be more varaities. So the statics might change.

Statics shows that 94% of the users are using their mobile phones in the beach. So that means that the product that is going to be designed should be applicable for this sort of item so the users can use it anytime they need.

It is showing that 56% are hiding their valuables inside different types of bags. Such as pack bag or cosmetics bag. So it should be consider that the product that is going to be design could be something that can easily hold like bags so the user feel comfortable with it.

In this question it shows that there are similar results. That 21% of the users are hiding their belongings in their bags or under the towel. So they want to keep their belongings near, but at the same time they are hiding them because they afraid from stealing.

From this survey what has been conducted is that people who like to go to the beach are having two common problems which are

· Safety place for their valuables.

· They are packing a lot of items with them.

1.6 Qualitative analysis open interview

A quantitative open interview has been made for 7 participants was chosen as convenient

samples because there wasn’t other references. It has been made by recording each interview after having a permission from each participant. The reason of choosing recording is because it’s easier for the researcher to use it again later as a reference to revise it and write all the points.

Interview 1: Sara Al-Mokri, dentist at king Abdul-Aziz University, 26 years old, she likes to go to the

beach and she visits the beach almost every weekend in Jeddah (Durrat-Al arous)

Main Questions:

· What are the difficulties that you face while you are packing your bags?

· What are the difficulties that you face when you are at the beach/ outdoor?

Interview (1) Analysis:

The user is complaining about two things:

· She has to carry a lot of stuff when she pack for the beach

· She also have to carry a lot of items with her when she’s in the beach

· Because of that she always lose her items very quickly

Interview 2: Sahal Khalid, anesthesiologist At King Abdul-Aziz hospital, 29 years old.

He goes to the beach almost every weekend with his wife.

Main Questions:

· What products do you prefer to always have with you when you plan for an outdoor activity or beach trip?

· What are the difficulties that you face while you are packing your bags?

· What are the difficulties that you face when you are at the beach/ outdoor?

· Where do you save your valuables when you are at the beach / outdoor busy with activities?

Interview (2) analysis:

The user likes to keep his belongings or specially his phone with him all the time so that’s why he is using a waterproof case. So this shows that the product that is going to be design should include this feature which is, to be waterproof and handheld.

Interview 3: Rayan Qutob, an Architect, at the ministry of health, 29 years old

He likes outdoor activities, and mostly he go to the beach twice every month.

Main questions:

· What products do you prefer to always have with you when you plan for an outdoor activity or beach trip?

· What are the difficulties that you face while you are packing your bags?

· What are the difficulties that you face when you are at the beach/ outdoor?

· Where do you save your valuables when you are at the beach / outdoor busy with activities?

· From what do you afraid when you put your compacts in a safe place?

· What about if you are planning for a beach trip?

· What about if you are at another outdoor not the beach?

· And if you were in hiking trip?

Interview (3) analysis:

What has been shown from this interview is that the user is packing a lot of plastic bags to split liquids from other stuff inside his bag. Also he likes snorkeling but he doesn’t have a place to store his snorkeling kit. So most of the time he loose them in the beach.

Also he gets annoyed from the sand that get stuck in his tanning creams. Moreover he always keep his stuff with another person.

Lastly according to the beach he sees that the cooler is very heavy and he cannot hold it alone.

Another thing is that the user likes hiking. And when he goes for a trip he keep all his stuff in his cross bag to keep it near to him. But it makes him not comfortable.

From this interview the product that is going to be design should be in conceder to choose lightweight materials and sand proof materials.

Interview 4 : Konooz Ajeeb, A Graphic design student at Jeddah College, 24 years old she likes

beach a lot and she goes whenever she can.

Main questions:

· What products do you prefer to always have with you when you plan for an outdoor activity or beach trip?

· What are the difficulties that you face while you are packing your bags?

· What are the difficulties that you face when you are at the beach/ outdoor?

· Where do you save your valuables when you are at the beach / outdoor busy with activities?

· From what do you afraid when you put your compacts in a safe place?

· Where do you put the beverages and snacks?

Interview 4 analysis:

The user is facing the problem of carrying a lot of stuff with her when she pack for the beach.

And the other thing is that she doesn’t like the sand sticks or get inside her valuables.

Interview 5 : Maram Ismail, house wife, 50 years old. She goes to the beach once or twice a

month.

Main questions:

· What products do you prefer to always have with you when you plan for an outdoor activity or beach trip?

· What are the difficulties that you face while you are packing your bags?

· What are the difficulties that you face when you are at the beach/ outdoor?

· Where do you save your valuables when you are at the beach / outdoor busy with activities?

· What do you prefer to have to help you enjoy grilling?

Interview (5) analysis:

The user is having issues one is that she packs a lot of stuff when she goes to the beach. And other is that she likes grilling at the beach but at the same time she get tiered from the sun. so she always prefer to have an umbrella with her when she grill the food. Also she gets annoyed from having the sand inside her valuables like her book and cream.

Interview 6: Sara Abulnaja, Supervisor or math department in king-Abdul-Aziz University, 31

years old. Sara goes to the beach once every month.

Main Questions:

· What products do you prefer to always have with you when you plan for an outdoor activity or beach trip?

· What are the difficulties that you face when you pack for your beach trip?

· What kind of bags do you prefer to have for the beach and why?

· What are the difficulties that you face when you are at the beach?

· Where do you save your valuables when you are at the beach activities?

Interview (6) analysis:

The user is preferring to have a waterproof beach bag so she doesn’t worry about the liquids that she’s

packing. Also she uses many bags for the beach so it can fit all her items.

She prefers to get her beach hat with her so she protect herself from sun heat. Also she always keeps her valuables hidden so no one can steal it or get lost.

Interview 7 : Nihal Abulnaja, 25 years old, Architecture graduate, working in PR at Effat

University.

Main Questions:

· What products do you prefer to always have with you when you plan for an outdoor activity or beach trip?

· What are the difficulties that you face when you pack for your beach trip?

· What kind of bags do you prefer to have for the beach and why?

· What are the difficulties that you face when you are at the beach?

· Where do you save your valuables when you are at the beach activities?

· From what do you afraid when you put your compacts in a safe place?

· Where do you put your smoothie when you go to the beach?

· Do you think the plastic mug works?

· What do you pack for the beach in your beach bag?

Interview (7) analysis:

Individual likes to have her shake with her when she goes to the beach. So she uses either a plastic mug for cool drinks or she put in inside the cooler if its available. But she prefer to have a better product to make her drink cool as long as it can be which can be easy to handle. Also she likes to have her belongings near to her so she can watch them closely. But she gets stuck when her valuables get ruined because she keeps them out all the time and it get damaged with sun heat.

General analysis:

· Individuals are concerning of packing a lot of stuff when they are planning for beach trip

· They are frustrated from the sand that goes inside their compacts like speakers, or stick on their drinks.

· They need some transportation method to transport their stuff from the car to the beach.

· They are afraid from stealing their stuff when they are busy with activities.

An observation has been made in in different beaches using random sampling to know more of what most items that individuals are using when they go to the beach. Also it will help to see what individuals have problems while they are on the beach.

Individuals like to have coolers with them at the beach to have some cool beverages while they are enjoying their activities. Different shapes, and sizes of coolers.

As we see in the picture we can analyze that some individuals are using beach chairs that are multi-functional which contains beach bottle, and a small pocket for storage.

Some people like to have their kid’s beach toys with them. So they can play and enjoy the day

with their family.

Another picture shows that individuals use umbrellas because of the sun heat in Saudi. So they can set in the shadow and meditate the sea view. Moreover as it shown sun screen and tanning creams. That are in the plastic bag.

Conclusion:

According to the observation that has been done there are some issues and problems that has been conducted in some of the pictures. 1st people are using plastic bags to pack their items like shoes and tanning creams. Another thing is that they try to find some multi-use products like the multi- beach chair that has some features which can help the user to be comfortable and relaxed on the beach.

1.8 Ergonomics and Human factors

Ergonomics are the body knowledge about human abilities and limitations relevant to the product.

While human factors are basically the physical and psychological reaction of the user to the product.

Hand tools always needs to be well designed. Although if the product is attractive it should be safe, efficient to use and buy. A good handled product is important for all daily use products.

It’s not about technology or development. It’s about understanding the human’s hand grip to make the right product for the user. A good designer have to know the exact measurements for comfortable hand grip so the design of the product can be successful.

There are some types of hand grips that the designer should know and understand.

· Power grip

This grip is basically holding an object by joining fingers around an object and overlapped around the thumb. But the object or handle should be big enough to separate fingers from the palm. It is the position for the handle to keep pressure away from the handheld. There’s

another variant which is the precision grip which is the thumb can be stretched up to the handle grip as it shown in figure.

This grip is used for small objects it is holding the object with the thumb and the side of the index finger. Another pinch grip which is stronger than the flat pinch grip and it’s more comfortable for the hand.

· External precision grip

It is almost like the pinch grip but has more support for the hand it is used mostly for writing. And more comfortable because the hand is relaxing on a supportive surface. And it is mostly used for writing.

External precision grip

· Internal precision grip

The grip is parallel to the object that is being hold which means it is opposite from the external grip. Also it is steady on the knuckle of the fingers. Usually used when holding thin objects like carved then wood pole.

There are some aspects and for the hand grip design that should be taken in mind when the design is being made. There are more than 50 criteria. 7 will be missioned in this research.

1. Size

For a comfortable size length at least can be ranged between 10-15centimeters, to fit the palm’s width. Long for large scale of population. Thickness, is important, the diameter should be 3-4 cm for adult male specifically. The more diameter is big it will not cause pressure on the hand palm.

2. Shape

Shape better to be cylindrical especially if the object is twisting. For example Rounded door handle. Diameter of the object better to be smooth. For more easiness in grip. Flattened for thumb and fingers for more comfort to the knuckles while twisting. And no sharp edges for so it doesn’t cause any physical injuries. For non-twisted handled A raised edge at the end of the handle would be more safe for the hand for example the fryer’s handle edge is higher to be as a guide for protecting hands from burning.

3. Surface

Smoothness for more easy in twisting and sliding. Also sometimes rough surfaces are good just like tines handle to make the grip steadier. Safety is important especially for sensitive skin to avoid allergies and injuries.

4. Security

An enlargement of the bottom end of the handle. For security against slip. So this will give hand more comfort. Central fingers grooving in some cases like some knifes for more comfort to the fingers. And non-rounded handled for not slipping for sweaty hands just like knifes.

6.1 Technical and legal requirements and safety requirements

Technical and legal requirements are basically the rules that are required for specific products, or mostly all the products. Although it is followed by the health and safety of the product that is

related to the consumer’s use. So beach/outdoor products doesn’t have a specific rules for each product. They are general rules that are related to the safety of the consumer’s use and the product materials. These rules are international in worldwide. It is depends on the user’s age and the product’s material. In this research it will be about beach products that are specific used by adults and some are can be used for all ages.

Mostly all beach products are made from sustainable materials and these materials doesn’t have

any requirements.
