Abstract
· Motivation: This section should include the importance of your work, the difficulty of the area, and the impact it might have if successful.
· Problem statement: What is the main argument of your project? Why are you doing it? Be careful not to use too much of technical terms.
· Methodology: Describe your interpretative angle or the types of evidence used in your research. Mention very briefly, market research, design research, analytical tools and case study analysis, that you will use in order to solve the design problem.
· Results: What will you conclude? Foreshadow (predict/suggest) the outcome of your discussion. What is the point of your project? Avoid vague, hand-waving results such as “very,” “small,” or “significant.”
Introduction
Statement of the problem. Historical context. Significance/importance of the study or project. Objectives of the study. Time and place of the study. Scope and limitation.
Problem Definition (Vision and objectives)
A problem statement is a clear concise description of the issue(s) that need(s) to be addressed by a problem solving team. It is used to center and focus the team at the beginning, keep the team on track during the effort, and is used to validate that the effort delivered an outcome that solves the problem statement.
Often have three elements:
The problem itself, stated clearly and with enough contextual detail to establish why it is important; The method of solving the problem, often stated as a claim.
The purpose, statement of objective and scope of the document the writer is preparing.
Market Study: Competitors product analysis
Similar products or items that are available; present their picture and specification. Keep consistency in the presentation of information, e.g. if you 5 types of detail for one product, then all the other products will have 5 types of details, and not more than that!
For every competitor product presented, write a short analysis, for example, “This product have this, this this features but its lacking the features that you want to add!” This shows the problem and gap in the market.
Design Research: Qualitative and Quantitative
You need to include all types of research methods that you want to use in your project. The objective of the research methods is to understand the user and their requirements.
Analytical tool for Design Development
In this sections, you need to identify the tools you want to use to analyses different aspects of your design. FAB Analysis; Pugh Matrix; Finite Element Analysis; Failure Mode and Effect Analysis; Design for Assembly; Design for Assembly; Design for Manufacture; Design for Environment; etc
Human Factors and Ergonomics
In this section, you need to identify the Ergonomics requirement for the project, for example, if the product will be suitable ergonomically for the user, in terms of size, shape; human factors and space
Technical and Legal Requirements
If your product is going to be using some electronics parts, mechanical parts, gases, materials, manufacturing processes.
Countries’ regulations if any; Saudi Arabia regulation, European regulation, American regulations related to the product.
Health and Safety consideration and regulations if any
If product is going to cause any types of harm to the user; any dangers related to the product; how can reduce the risk of injuries, while product is being used. Health and Safety regulations related to the product in Saudi Arabia regulation, European regulation, American regulations related to the product.
