Raw Materials

The process that Smitheford is currently using to produce pressed powder is very time consuming and involves a lot of storage, multiple inspections of both the product and in customs. The product is being shipped to too many places which is time consuming and costly. The new process suggests that instead of shipping the raw materials to Minnesota and allowing them to sit in storage tanks after being tested for toxins, why not ship them directly to Puerto Rico and have the raw material inspected at that manufacturing plant. While the raw material is being manufactured in Puerto Rico, the new process allows for the completion of the entire product. Instead of the paper and plastic for the finished good being shipped from the Czech Republic, it is now being shipped from the same company that the raw materials are being shipped from to produce the cosmetic. Once the finished product is completed it can then be shipped to Cologne Germany to the warehouse in order to be distributed.

The new process will address Demings 14 points in that they will be adopting a new way of doing business. They will now cut out all of the inspections and the product will only be inspected when the raw material reaches Puerto Rico, when the production of the cosmetic is completed and in customs, which is required. Raw material will now come from one supplier rather than several different suppliers. Smitheford will need to implement new training and educate their employees on the new process. This may take some time but with effective communication and good leadership it will be a success.
