Clinical Practice Guidelines- Standardized guidelines based on scientifically
established protocols to guide physicians' clinical decisions. Purpose is to overcome
some of the draw backs of small area variations.
Cost Efficiency- evaluates the relationship between increasing medical
expenditures/risks and improvements in health levels. Medical services are considered
to be cost efficient as long as the benefits received are greater than the costs incurred
or risks anticipated.
Critical Pathways- used to identify planned medical interventions along with
expected patient outcomes for a given condition. Serves as a plan of action for all
disciplines involved in the patient's care and incorporates a system for charting
variances from the critical path plan. use reduces costs and improves quality by
reducing errors, improving coordination among interdisciplinary players, and reducing
variations in the practice systems.
Risk Management-consists of proactive efforts to prevent adverse events related to
clinical care and facilities operations and is especially focused on avoiding medical
malpractice. Even though malpractice may serve as a deterrent to poor technical
quality of care, initiatives undertaken by an institution to review clinical processes and
establish protocols can enhance quality and reduce malpractice lawsuits.
