Course Assignment Quality Appraisal of Evidence Process
Literature Review Strategies
In the Practice-based Problem, students completed a broad search for information related to the history, the current problem’s status, the practice gap, and the theoretical framework associated with their practice problem. Now that you have a thorough understanding of the details associated with the practice problem, it is time to begin searching for evidence that will help answer the “review question”.
Using the review question(s), and theoretical/conceptual framework, students will conduct a very focused search of research and non-research evidence in the field. Students will create inclusion and exclusion criteria to assist with the search, in addition to keeping their search results using the “Integrative Review Question(s) Search Log”. The below information outlines the steps that should be completed with the literature review strategies.
1. Inclusion and Exclusion Search Criteria – first students will use what they have learned about the practice-based problem and develop inclusion/exclusion criteria that will help focus the search for evidence to answer the integrative review questions. Using Table 1, students will list the inclusion/exclusion criteria and write a narrative paragraph explaining the rationale and basis for the criteria.
2. Integrative Review Question(s) Search Log Appendix A – Once search terms are selected, complete the Integrative Review Question Search Log in Appendix A. List key search terms, synonyms, Boolean operators, and advanced search techniques.
3. Research Articles and Other Sources – As you complete your search, save sources in a folder in preparation for the quality appraisal. Your search should contain research articles published within the past five years. Reminder: the articles are not about identifying the problem they should be focused on solving the problem and addressing the review question.
Resource :
· Access and read the below chapters in A Step-by-Step Guide to Conducting an Integrative Review (Toronto & Remington, 2020)
· Read Chapter 2, “Formulating Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria
· Read Chapter 3
· Meet with the librarian to discuss strategies for completing a focused search for evidence that will answer your review question(s).
Literature Quality Appraisal
Under this heading, students will discuss the results of their quality appraisal of the literature. Students will use the Johns Hopkins Evidence-based Practice (JHEBP) model to appraise the quality of evidence collected related to the review question. The evidence should include research and non-research evidence. The following steps should be followed in this section to determine the hierarchy and quality of evidence to be included in the study:
Step 1: Using the evidence collected in the literature search step, determine the level of evidence using JHEBP 4th ed. Appendix D JH Hierarchy of Evidence Guide
Step 2: Using the level of evidence from step conduct a quality appraisal of the evidence using the below protocol.
|
For Empirical Research with a 1-3 level of evidence use the Johns Hopkins Research Evidence Appraisal Tool.
· Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals, 4 th ed
· Read Chapter 6: Evidence Appraisal: Research · Appendix E: Research Evidence Appraisal Tool · Please note that Appendix E has several sections, and you need to complete only the section that applies to your source being reviewed.
|
For Non-empirical Research with a 4-5 level of evidence, use the Johns Hopkins Non-Research Evidence Appraisal Tool.
· Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals, 4 th ed
· Read Chapter 7 pages: Evidence Appraisal: Non- Research · Appendix F: Non-Research Appraisal Tool · Please note that Appendix F has several sections, and you need to complete only the section that applies to your source being reviewed. |
Step 3: Add all evidence that were appraised to Appendix B: Appraisal Results log.
Step 4: Create a narrative explaining the results of the quality appraisal in the body of this section.
