"What is your take? Do you think the police are absolutely biased towards black people?" this question was posed by Lester Holt, the NBC newsman, to Hilary Clinton during the presidential debate. The context of this question categorically implied that the science of biasness in police brutality has meta morphed into a national discussion and into the consciousness of the majority of the people (Millar & Vittrup, 2020). There is evidence of racial prejudice in the manner in which police carry out their policing duties. Police brutality towards people of color, especially African-American men, has its roots since dating back to 1963 and beyond. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, in his "I have a dream" address, and during the era of civil unrest and boycott, said, "we can never be satisfied provided that the Negro remains the victim of horrifying terrors and brutalities from the police."
Racially instigated police violence is a recurrent issue in our society today. The emergence of social movement has continued to publicize police violence as a matter of national security and dialogue. However, there has been little development in the reduction in the numbers of people of color being murdered by the police (Schwartz & Jahn, 2020). More research and legal reforms are required to try and curb this vice. While there are many strategies proposed for resolving the police violence against the public, the discussions have not fully addressed the factors that cause to the discrepancy that exists between the number of black people and white people who lose their lives due to police violence and brutality and the lack of accountability in the system. Are there policies that support this kind of biasness? Do we need to change the laws or structure the police departments? People of color, especially blacks, will continue perishing through police brutality unless there is enough research to address this kind of gap in society.
This article will bridge the gap that currently exists by examining the factors that contribute to police brutality towards people of color, especially black men, and the system's lack of accountability. The study looks to draw a parallel between the factors that motivate police brutality and what really motivates the police brutality towards people of color. Understanding these factors will enable for the formulation of strategies that will help in solving the vice. This research will be necessary for streamlining the policing department and encouraging fair use of power.
