Cross-Cultural Experience, Student Performance and Leadership Development

The problem of my dissertation study relates to the imbalance and partiality with regard to equitable consideration and inclusion of multicultural viewpoints on curriculum models, and student leadership development. The details concern identification of the concerns and needs of students from different cultures, especially from minority racial or ethnic groups. Further, there are culture-related issues that affect students from minority groups in academic institutions that can negatively affect their performance, social relation, and attitudes towards other students, and their levels of motivation and participation in learning activities. Although leadership models presented by instructors responsible for student affairs can adequately fit student leaders from diverse cultures, new ways and improvements ought to be made in order to make the leadership models fit cultural sensitivities of students from minority groups (Tamam & Krauss, 2017). Informal and formal interracial interactions can significantly be influenced by leadership models. This is because socialization amongst students from multiverse ethnic groups can induce cultural sensitivities in learning institutions.

The main historical context that the research draws on is marked with key elements such as slavery, and ethnic and racial discrimination. Further, cultural stereotyping in which some cultures were viewed as inferior to others with regard to intellectual and social competencies is also another key historical element that the literature disapproves (Tyler, 2015). Such socioeconomic inequalities have persisted in the community up to the current times although they have taken different forms. The available literature has mainly focused on cohesion among multicultural academic communities; little research has focused on addressing minority student leadership development with regard to the integration of minority cultures in leadership models. Further, integration of different cultures in learning curriculum has been given little attention by researchers. As such, my dissertation seeks to address these issues in depth with the aim of providing appropriate recommendations that can contribute to improvement of minority student performance, and increase their success as student leaders.
