Choice of Source

Explain in the space below why you have chosen the source you gave as an APA reference above.

Reasons for choosing this source

I am about to start a master in law and this article related to my future study, in addition to being a law enforcement practitioner, looking at individuals’ insurance contract in the construction industry and how to enforce them excite me. The author Catherine Davis is well known for her support on issues dealing with construction projects where she highlights some practical tips as well major risky areas in the industry.

Source Analysis

In order to complete these questions, read the source carefully and consider the ideas which the author(s) discusses. Think about the general issue which the article discusses and how the article extends our understanding of the topic. This may be new research introduced in the article or a synthesis of a number of articles already written about the topic.

What is the general issue

That the source discusses?

Importance of signing insurance contracts on construction: The signing of a contract is always seen as a complex process that is always pushed at the end of all activities when a person gets to sign any building contract. Catherine goes further more to focus of the major importance of each type of insurance available for any construction worker. In the article she talk about that insurance covers all material damage to workers. Also, insurance for acts of terrorism is another important law for securing contracts covering individuals against acts of terrorism from the outside world. Finally, Catherine Davis adds to greater general liability insurance and occupational insurance.

How does the article extend your understanding of the topic?

This article helps extend my understanding of construction insurance laws through providing a detailed explanation about each of the four types of insurance available to all workers in the construction industry. The authors explanation is useful as it presents a clear outline of the importance of workers being insured.

Does the source collect / present new data? Or does it synthesize existing information based on an existing body of knowledge? (Give details)

This article collected information from different studies, as a scholar, Catherine has used external sources content to create an important and helpful information. She has referred from works cited in: http://www.building.co.uk/a-quick-guide-to-construction-insurance/5043885 article and http://www.3diltd.co.uk which refer mostly to the types and steps in signing of the insurance contracts. This relation makes her article useful as it has well research content.

What are the conclusions?

In conclusion, the author believes that decisions on the types of insurance that will be taken for construction can be difficult but confirm the importance of entering into a contract before starting work on a particular project. The author consist that in order to avoid gaps, legal advisers or insurance advisors should be advised to help cover insurance for all available projects.

Are you convinced by the conclusions? Why / why not?

I am convinced by the author’s conclusions as she highlights the importance of one insuring him/herself through usage of correct legal method at ones disposal. The author has convinced me that it’s important to also understand which type have to take for them to be fully insured. However, I feel she should mentioned the advantage and disadvantage of each type of insurance.

Source Application

In order to complete these questions, you will need to think about how future research can extend our understanding of the topic.

· What are the gaps in knowledge which have emerged from this article which are not addressed by the article?

· What unanswered research questions have emerged from this article which, when answered, would extend the field of knowledge?

· Finally, how can these gaps be addressed and how easy would this be to do?

Note that these gaps may be identified by the article itself or may be identified by you.

What questions could be researched to extend the field of knowledge about the topic?

This article, insurance in construction contracts 2012, is an example of a descriptive article on a major broad topic. Thorough research needs to be done on advantage and disadvantage of each insurance cover type.

What is the gap in the knowledge?

The main gap in the knowledge around this topic is how the different factors lead to the selection of one and not the other type of insurance cover. Individual studies should be carried on the factors favourable for each type of insurance in construction contracts

What information would need to be collected to conduct this research?

A large amount of both: legal and public construction information should be researched on and be included in the contracts so as to carter for all the needs of the workers at a particular site, consequently, data on new development projects should be used to relate what is on the ground and how the law is enforced.

How feasible would it be to carry out this research?

The research would not be easy to carry out, as it would require collecting a very large amount of data across many construction place industries and their databases all over a particular country. However, as this information would be very useful in forming national policy, it is likely that governments and law enforcement organisations would be very eager to support any research efforts in this field.
