Hello Class and Professor!
Ethics plays a vital role in each of our lives, especially when it involves the security of our most valuable assets such as a business, home, personal property, as well as ourselves and our loved ones. Without it, we run the risk of having these same assets exposed to vulnerabilities that can range from causing great harm to people or a major security incident towards a business that may become costly. If it was completely eliminated, it could create an environment without legislative rule and chaos. This is why ethics must be instilled into each of us so we may adhere to societal standards. In other words, ethics is understanding of what is right or wrong and being able to choose to do the right thing (“Security,” 2017).
For example, if we were left to be the decision maker on hiring private security for a business, one would assume that a company would only hire the best. To make this determination, we need to consider what type of training is applied, their own code of ethics followed, and what disciplinary actions are taken if they fail to follow this code (“Security,” 2017). If these items are not considered, a company may run the risk of hiring corrupted security guards that may cause a liability issue. This is why time must be taken to research to ensure the right people are being hired to perform their duties in protecting what is important.
Most private security companies abide by the Task Force on Private Security Code of Ethics because it outlines their responsibilities by stating their purpose of protecting life and property from criminal acts, adhering to the established laws, and respect an individual’s rights; it acts as a guidance tool for security officers to follow (Thompson, 2016). It is also implemented that security officers cannot become biased and must refrain from involving their emotions influence their judgement (“Code,” n.d.). Most importantly, security officers must not accept any type of “payment” without the company’s knowledge; this can be viewed as a bribe or an individual who can easily be coerced (“Code,” n.d.). Overall, ethics must always be implemented to prevent each one of us from becoming easily influenced and guides us into making the best decision(s) for ourselves or others that may be affected.
