Principles of Sociology SOC 225

Research Assignment/ Fall 2021 / McLaurin

Sociology is the systematic study of human behavior in society (Benokraitis, 2010). By examining basic sociological principles, concepts, and theories this course will lead students to critically explore several social issues in the United States and worldwide. Social issues may include: research, culture, socialization, social interaction, groups and organizations, marriage, the family, stratification, inequality, gender, race, ethnicity, education, government, social movements, and social change.

Students will use their “sociological imagination” to link micro-level, individual experiences to macro-level, social structures. Topics covered in this class may be controversial, make students feel uncomfortable, or challenge what students believe to be true. However, such confrontation is an integral part of learning and the classroom is the ideal forum for such exploration. Sharing diverse views and experiences can enrich each student’s learning process. Therefore, all students must feel safe to express themselves. The environment in this course will be one that facilitates open, non-judgmental discussion with a Christian focus and application. Please choose a sociological research topic or research question and construct a research paper based on this topic/question. What I mean when I say Sociological/Social Science based is…..

1. of, pertaining to, or characteristic of sociology.

2. dealing with social questions or problems.

3. organized and structured into a society; social.

You are to choose a sociological research topic. Your research paper should be 3-5 pages long (this does not include your title page or the works cited page). You must have 4 scholarly sources and one of those should be your textbook. It should be typed, 12 point, Times New Roman font, double spaced, APA or MLA formatted, spell checked, and proof read. You must have in-text citations and a reference or a works cited page.
