Introduction

Prince Mohammed Bin Abdul Aziz Hospital (PMBAAH) is among the largest healthcare facilities in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The facility is under MNG-HA and is ranked as number five. The healthcare facility is situated at the foot of Mount Uhud which is along Prince Naif Road. The facility is full services and has a bed capacity of 215. The facility offers different services to clients either as inpatients or outpatients from the different hospital departments. These medical services include; surgery, emergency services, ambulatory care, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, and imaging services. Also, the facility offers antenatal services for women, dental services, ENT, and laboratory services among many others. From all these services offered, and the big number of patients and employees that the facility holds at a go, avoiding risks is almost inevitable. Fast moving machines are operated regularly together with the use of chemicals and sharp objects. Nevertheless, the facility has a way of dealing with risks internally. This essay shall hence focus on analyzing risk management at the Prince Mohammed Bin Abdul Aziz Hospital

Risk identification, management, reduction, and prevention steps

Since the facility was established, it has faced a series of risks, and it is a commendable thing because it has managed to control the situations. The healthcare facility has always used a six-step process in making sure that the risks are accurately identified, managed, reduced, and prevented so that they do not reoccur again in the future. This six-step process is as follows; hazard identification, risk identification, risk assessment, risk control, documenting the process, and monitoring and reviewing the process (Wallace, et al., 2015). This means that the facility first points out the different situations and circumstances that are likely to trigger risks like accidents and incidences. With point out such hazards, it becomes possible for the facility to act before a risk takes place and in case the risk takes place before the hazard is identified, the facility moves fast to the second step. Risk identification is made to determine whether it has taken place before or it is the first time.

Risk identification also helps the facility to know whether other unidentified risk hazards requires being identified and dealt with (Haimes, 2015). The risk assessment is done by the facility to determine the levels of impact that the risk could have or have on the victim. Risk control measures that the facility establishes and implements to contain the situation. Notably, the risk control measures are not only meant to solve the present risk but also address future challenges that may arise. Documenting the process is done by the facility to keep a clear record of risks within the facility and the control measures. Lastly, the evaluation and reviewing are done to make sure that the control measures established and implemented achieved the desired goals.

Facility risk manager

The facility management team is aware that the services and equipment being used at the facility are a major risk both to the patients and employees. It is for this reason that the facility has recruited a reliable, competent, and accountable team of professionals to address risk related issues (Reason, 2016). The facility has established an effective and operational safety department that is headed by Dr Nawwaf Alhmaidan who is the director of this department. Dr Nawwaf Alhmaidan has a doctorate in risk management and safety practices and also has a medical background, experience, and educational background. To work with him, the facility has recruited a team of approximately 45 other professionals in the health, safety, and risk management areas of specialization. This is a great indication that the facility is highly dedicated when it comes to risk management and promoting a safe environment for the patients and facility employees. To make the safety management department to efficiently work and achieve the desired results, Dr Nawwaf Alhmaidan has specific roles that are attached to his job description. These roles are as follows;

1. To manage successful implementation of all risk function (Parand, Dopson, Renz, & Vincent, 2014). These include functions like the implementation processes, identification of tools and systems, assessing, measuring, managing, monitoring and reporting all reported and identified risks.

2. To assist in the development and management processes that help in identifying and evaluating areas of business where risk is high and assess applicable control measures

3. To oversee the process through which risk policies and procedures are developed and also approve risk limits.

4. To monitor both critical and major risk issues within the facility

5. To head and coordinate all risk-related meeting and conferences within the facility

6. To advice the executive management team in the risk control and preventative measures that should be put in place to keep the facility safe from risks.

7. Provide the safety team with in-house user training programs that would help them to be equipped hence empowered to address any risk that may arise.

8. To document all risk activities taking place within the department to provide a comprehensive report to the executive committee about the achievement and plans of the department.

Managing risk for both the employees and the patients

Effective risk management in a healthcare setting according to Adibi et al., (2012); entails the act of making sure that all the people within the facility are safe at all times and that in case of an unexpected incident, the situation is controlled as fast as possible. This is the only way that patients and employees can be protected from any harm that may affect them physically and psychologically. The facility has specific ways through which risk is managed for both employees and patients (Zarezade et al., 2013). The first strategy used is where the company through the safety department has a hotline number that patients and employees have access and it free to call. Throughout the facility, the hotline number has been displayed, and the information is encouraging employees and staffs to call in case a potential risk is identified is displayed. This is one way that the facility manages risk because they have a way of being informed and acting as fast as possible hence promoting the safety of both patients and employees.

From time to time, the facility through the safety department conducts safety and risks training to all employees (Al Ghobain et al., 2017). This is an effective strategy because the employees are the ones who are mostly within the facility. Hence, their understanding of risks and being aware of the recommended action n to take goes a long way in promoting their safety and that of the patients. The more reason is that in some cases, patients are not aware of risks or potential hazards and others are not in a state of taking any action. It hence calls for the attention and action from the employees to take the right action promptly.

Risk programs

The facility is well organized and structured in the department, and every department has specific roles and responsibilities to perform. This means that each department has its programs that are used to effect the prescribed roles and responsibilities. The safety and risk department is one the facility departments and has specific roles that focus on promoting safety within the organization (Zarezade et al., 2013). Therefore, no other department has safety programs, and this means that there are no cases of overlapping. According to the way the structure is arranged, any safety and risk information and orders must emanate from the department, and the employees can only act as per the order and instructions are given from the department. It is for this reason that the safety and risk management department is solely responsible for training employees on their roles when it comes to promoting safety within the facility.

Opinion

From the way the facility has been able to avoid risks; it is evident that the safety department is doing well on their duties. There are times where risk potential hazards have been identified, and the team was able to swift into action. This is a clear indication that the team is competent, experienced, reliable, and committed to their organizational duties. It is for this reason that I feel the facility is doing enough to address risks because it has the latest technological systems that help in detecting and mitigating risks. Additionally, it is on record that the safety teams go through training sessions immediately a new system or safety program is installed within the facility to keep them updated with the latest technology on how to identify and address risks.
