After reading about what the records of the bombing of MOVE in the middle of Philadelphia, consult at least five of the photographs [clearly identifying them in your essay] in the large collection of photographs provided in the third link, follows:  Photographic collection of the bombing of MOVE (Links to an external site.)

CONTENT QUESTIONS:

--What might these photographs tell us about the events in this episode of Philadelphia history?

--What might these photographs illustrate about African American history in the United States?

--What might these photographs illustrate about protest movements and movements that are well out of the mainstream?

--What do you think the neighbors of the MOVE organization in Philadelphia were thinking about both the organization and the police response?

Within your essay provide answers to the content questions above.  Be sure to have answers to the questions within your essay, not as listed questions with following answers.  In addition to answering these questions about the photographs, also answer the five bold-highlighted questions in the attached file, "Bones of the Past"  regarding the photographic collection as a whole, not individual photographs. These questions and the following short discussion of them in this Bones of the Past attached file should help you understand how historians use primary sources to write about the past.  Photographs can be primary sources.  Ask the instructor if you don't understand this.   

This is an essay, so don't write in one long paragraph.  Have an introductory paragraph and a closing paragraph which sums up your paper.  This obviously means that you have to have AT LEAST three paragraphs in your paper.  The paper must be at least 550 words.  You will not lose points if it is longer.  The paper must be submitted as a Microsoft Word file upload [not cut and paste and not as a pdf] in order to receive credit.  If you don't have access to Microsoft Word, use googledocs to submit your paper to the assignment in a MS Word file.  STUDY THE RUBRIC BELOW BEFORE YOU WRITE.  YOU WILL RECEIVE A 0 FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT IF YOU DON'T SUBMIT YOUR PAPER IN MS WORD OR AS A TEXT DOCUMENT.  NO PDFs!

RUBRIC:  Your assignments will be graded on:

            spelling and grammar (10 points)Do not use “I” or “you” in these papers—write in the third person, as your textbook does.  Do not give your opinion on the topic unless it is specifically requested in the assignment content questions. Just present an analysis of the primary sources as historical documents.  These are NOT opinion papers.  Take yourself and "your people, (however you self-identiy)" out of your answer.  

            introductory and closing paragraphs (10 points); Introduce to your reader the photographs and a general discussion of who created them.  Assume your reader knows the questions you are answering, so there is no need to write them out.   Do not write out the questions in your paper. In your closing paragraph, sum up what you have presented in the body of the paper. If you submit an essay of one long paragraph, you obviously cannot receive points for these two required paragraphs--introduction and closing.  

length (550-750 words); following directions--your name, course number & date on top of first page (10 points)
