PRIMARY SOURCE ASSIGNMENT PRE-WRITING

Title _________________________________________________________________________

Author _______________________________________________________________________

1. What type of document is this? (Ex. Newspaper, telegram, map, letter, court record, etc.)

2. For what audience was this document written?

3. What is the context in which this was written (what was going on, etc.)

4. Summarize the article, and be sure to include a thesis or main idea:

5. Answer the questions located at the end of the primary source you chose. Try to put them in paragraph form. You may use 1-3 paragraphs, depending on how much information you have and if the questions need to be split up or if they can be combined to be answered in one paragraph.

6. Think about the author’s perspective as mentioned in the “Interpreting Documents” article. Consider the “Bias” informational document. Reading over the source you chose, what might be the author’s bias? Consider Who created the document, When it was created, Why it was created, and For Whom it was created (You do not need to tell me all of these things in this paragraph unless they are important – they are just to consider when writing your paragraph). Knowing what you know about the author and his/her bias, would you consider this person a reliable source. Why or why not?
