Protagonist Winston Smith lives in a totalitarian government that is controlled in all aspects by a figurehead, Big Brother.  His attempts to resist to this oppression by writing seditious ideas in a diary and starting a non-sanctioned affair with Julie.  He is then captioned and rehabilitated.  Ideas such as control through use of language, -"newspeak," "doublespeak"-, and the rewriting of history of those in power through the crushing of individuality are prominent throughout the story.
