Healthy People 2020 Assignment

Background and Purpose:

Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) is the federal government’s prevention agenda/framework for building a healthier nation. It is a statement of national health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to health and to establish national goals to reduce these threats. https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/About-Healthy-People

A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, called Leading Health Indicators (LHIs), have been selected to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them. Multiple (26) LHIs have been identified and they are organized into 12 Topics, such as “mental health,” “substance abuse” and “access to healthcare.” https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/Leading-Health-Indicators

The purpose of this activity is to evaluate the progress we have made over this past decade by focusing on the impact and epidemiology of multiple Leading Health Indicators (LHIs). For example, you will evaluate the extent to which we have achieved certain objectives related to a single LHI Topic. You will also compare data to IL evidence. Finally, you will describe several relevant evidence-based interventions that will continue to support progress in meeting national health objectives.

Objectives:

At the end of this activity, the student will be able to:

1. Provide a topical overview of an LHI Topic, including its impact upon the health of American citizens.

2. Determine the extent to which objective(s) related to the LHI Topic have been met at the national and IL state levels.

3. List at least five evidence-based interventions to enhance progress related to meeting the LHI objectives.

4. Appreciate the importance of relying on epidemiological and other strong evidence to improve the health of American citizens

Course Outcomes:

This activity aligns with several of the course outcomes as stated below:

1. Use the principles of critical thinking to understand health promotion priorities for all individuals, families, communities, and the global community.

2. Examine effective methods for health promotion and health maintenance for individuals, families, and communities at every stage of development.

3. Promote research-based and economical health-education interventions for Healthy People 2020 focus areas.

Instructions:

1. Begin by viewing the following links which explain the basics of HP2020: https://www.healthypeople.gov/node/5840

2. Select a Leading Health Indicator TOPIC. Use the following link to see a list: https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/leading-health-indicators/2020-LHI-Topics

a. Note that each Topic, such as “Mental Health,” has between one and four specific LHIs listed--for example, “suicide.” Each specific LHI is then tied to a related objective for which data has been collected.

b. Some data is only current to 2017. National and state data are provided.

3. Create a presentation for your peers that familiarizes them with these topics

Topic: ORAL HEALTH

· Succinctly summarize the “Overview and Impact” information r/t the topic. This includes any information about the importance of monitoring this topic.

· List the specific health indicators under the topic.

· and list the objective(s) associated with each LHI.

· Succinctly summarize overall national progress made toward meeting the objective(s)

· and compare progress to IL data

· Describe appropriate nursing interventions/best practices relevant to the topic and its associated indicators. (Best practices are based on best evidence, so use Systematic Reviews and/or Guidelines as sources when they are available (for example, look under the “Tools and Resource” tab first).

· Note that your presentation can be rendered as a PPT presentation or poster or some other creative way. But you will need to provide a short doc as a “handout” that highlights the information you have provided for your classmates.
