Hello All,
During the initial week's announcement, I note that "you will be asked to interview the following: (a) a family or person from another culture and (b) a counselor in the field that you have interest in. Based on current circumstances, these interviews can be done via phone (video and audio) or Face to Face. I am providing you with these details now, so that you can start to consider who this individual will be". The webinar that I offered during week 1 of class, students attended and asked clarifying questions about this assignment. Next week (week 4) this assignment will be due. Please review the syllabus, so that you can plan accordingly to complete your Cultural Immersion Project. This project is broken down into the 4 parts described below:
Part I – Interview:
Choose an area of multiculturalism (e.g. ethnicity, language, socioeconomic status sexual orientation, and/or physical exceptionality). Sue & Sue (2016) Chapters 14-21 provides detailed information on several of the groups you might from which you may choose. Do not choose a person in your culture. Interview an individual or family from the chosen culture. Before the interview, read the instructions for your paper and presentation so that you obtain the necessary information required for the assignment. I am not requiring anyone to engage in this activity face to face. This interview can be conducted via phone or video conferencing.
Note: Please do not choose a culture similar to yours. This is for you to engage in a different experience. Also, you will stay with the identified culture throughout the entire assignment.
Part II – Culture Immersion Activity
(Virtually or Face to Face) Attend an event or activity (festival, church service, homecoming, conference, family activity) of the chosen group. It is important that you choose an activity that is unfamiliar to you and promotes introspection about an attitude or belief you have held. If you choose a person with a disability, attend a public event as a person with that disability (i.e. in a wheelchair, blind simulation).
Part III - Written Evidence of Culture Immersion
Write 1-2 pages reflecting your interview. Which culture did you chose? Who did you interview? Where was the interview held? What did they tell you?
Write 5-7 pages discussing the culture itself, your experience in the culture and your reactions to it. Ensure that you include the following:
A) Characteristics and Strengths
B) Family Structure
C) Cultural and Spiritual Values
D) Specific Challenges
E) Expectations Regarding Counseling
F) Reflection of Your Experience & Implications for Working with this population
Your paper should include at least 3 scholarly resources.
Part IV – PowerPoint Presentation
Your presentation should mirror your paper and include pictures of you participating in the activity and artifacts of the culture. The PowerPoint presentation will be uploaded in two manners.
· You will upload the PowerPoint to the discussion board by 10/28/2020. This will allow your classmates to also learn about different cultures and engage in discussion.
· The full assignment which consist of a minimum of 7 pages (excluding title and reference pages) written assignment and the PowerPoint will be submitted/uploaded by 11/1/2020.
Note that you also need to upload this assignment to Live Text.
The assignment is available for viewing and the rubric is attached.
Please reach out to me, if you have any questions and/or want confirmation prior to the assignment that your chosen culture is sufficient.
I have to say, I truly enjoy this assignment and am looking forward to what you all bring to class next week.
Thank you,
Dr. Gooden-Alexis
