Below is the discussion topic along with video link – do not answer 1 and 2 but respond to the 3 discussions answers posted below the questions in 3- 5 sentences for each – there should be three responses total (one for each answer) share your opinion about those answers and if you agree with that or not. Add any comments related to the topic: https://www.ted.com/talks/daphne_koller_what_we_re_learning_from_online_education 1) Choose ONE aspect of how data driven instruction decision making can be informed withing this environment. Be specific mentioning concepts shared by the presenter in the video.
2) Share ONE grading strategy shared by the presenter that is used in the MOOC environment. What are your thoughts on how might this strategy inform data driven instructional decision making?
Answer1:
1)One interesting example that the speaker mentioned was the analysis of the number of wrong answers can help instructors to find out what could be the actual reason that led to the wrong answer. Because the quantity is big enough, so the instructors can notice there’s a group of students come out with the wrong answer. If it happens in a small classroom, teachers may not pay attention if a few students make it wrong. With big data analysis, teachers are able to figure out what else they can provide to students.
2)I think peer review grading is a popular grading strategy. Some teachers will assign students with random peers and ask them to grade homework from each other. This strategy allows students to learn from their peers. Also, students can easily notice the wrong answer from their peers. Teachers can also collect data after grading and collect feedback from students so that teachers can continue to analyze what answers that most students have and why did they make it wrong.
Answer2:
1)The monitoring progress can be informed by the quizzes with deadlines on regular basis. Quizzes with deadlines will motivate students to finish their reading and learning on time in order to pass the quizzes on time to get the scores. Also quizzes are arranged after every small section of new knowledge to make sure students understand and help break new knowledge learning into smaller and less stressful chunks.
2)MOOC uses technologies to grade on very large scale. technologies can grade mathematical formula and even simple scripts. The advancement of automatic grading empowers the MOOC to enroll more students and allows instructors to have more complex quizzes to measure a variety of learning successes without limitation of teaching assistant.
Answer3:
1)In the TED talk, the presenter mentioned that online instruction is not only a video that you can sit there and watch. Actually, the instruction video will pause and have some practice for students to do to move on. And thought this data collection, the instructor can make sure students participate in the interaction, and also, by analyzing the data students upload, the instructor can figure out where students do well, and where they might need more help. Like the other example, she mentioned that there are 2000 people who make the same mistake on a same question. The instructor will go back examine to see if there is anything wrong or problem that they can help students move on.
2)I like computer-based grading. She is right, for the MOOC, it's not impossible for the instructor to grade everyone. And even most hands-on grading, instructor or TA also only check on the keywords or key points. And computers can do that easily and faster even than the TA. And this grading strategy can better collect the data and generate into a graph which is easier to understand and easier for instructor to do further planninng.
