Cheers to Twenty-One! ❖ Audience: Upcoming 21-year-olds
❖ Setting: College campuses in California (Legal drinking age in the U.S. is 21)
❖ Purpose: My goal is to offer valuable advice to young adults who are ready to transition into their 21st year of life.
I will also share personal experiences of when I was 21 and argue why my recommendations are relevant.

Dress to Impress ❖ First, understand the importance of appearance and attire
❖ Take yourself shopping!
➢ I went shopping on my 21st birthday and purchased classy and
professional attire. I always made sure I had a fresh haircut and my
clothes were presentable to the people around me. Because of this, I
was able to get a higher status job position and eventually meet my
partner that I am currently still with.
❖ Dressing to impress will ultimately:
➢ Boost your confidence
➢ Give others a better impression of you
➢ Give you the courage to meet potential partners
Monitor Alcohol Consumption
❖ Next, you are now LEGALLY able to drink and attend bars and clubs
❖ My advice is to relax, socialize, and don’t overdrink!
❖ Drinking in moderation and having water between each alcoholic
beverage is key. This can prevent:
➢ Hangovers
➢ Unwanted trips to the toilet
➢ Acting foolishly around friends, family, or in public
❖ As I was lying on the bathroom floor back when I was four months in of
being 21, I realized that maybe I shouldn’t have had that much to drink.
Had I been monitoring my alcohol consumption, I could’ve avoided
throwing up all over the bathroom that night. Eeek! :(
Drinking and Driving = Unacceptable
❖ Finally, this is my most important piece of advice to you all
❖ Drinking & driving Impairs one’s cognitive and physical ability
➢ ~10,000 killed in 2014 due to alcohol-related driving incidents
➢ This is nearly 31% of all traffic accidents
❖ Morally unacceptable
❖ Uber and Lyft extremely popular and useful!
➢ I use the Lyft app almost every weekend when I want to spend a night
out on the town. I’d much rather pay the price for a Lyft ride as
opposed to paying the price of losing my life or risking the lives of
innocent people around me.

The previous three suggestions are those I found most relevant to my life when I began my journey
as a 21-year-old. Dressing to impress, monitoring your alcoholic beverage consumption, and NOT
drinking and driving are crucial pieces of advice that ALL upcoming 21-year-olds should abide by.
Remember: be safe, responsible, cautious, and simply enjoy being young! Time flies after this, believe me.
From this 26-year-old, to you—CHEERS TO TWENTY-ONE!
