REQUIRED TEXTS:
We will be using Writer At Work in order to complete the Grammar Exercises due for Week 2, 3, & 4
You will need Brief English Handbook in order to complete a Rewrite for your small papers.
RECOMMENDED TEXTS:
If you want to complete your Journal assignment using Natalie Goldberg’s text, you might want to purchase Writing Down the Bones. It is an excellent text.
If you wish to complete the Open Book Quiz from The Elements of Styles, you might also want to purchase Strunk & White’s text.
8 ASSIGNMENTS
For Week 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 you will have a writing assignment that is made of Small Papers
For Weeks 2, 3, & 4 you will have Grammar Exercises to complete from Writer At Work.
For Weeks 1,2, 3, 4, 5 you will have Journal entries to complete.
If you wish to complete a Rewrite, you will an opportunity to rewrite a previously written; Rewrites are due the following week it was assigned.
For Weeks 1, 2, 3, 5, & 6 you will have a brief PowerPoint Questionnaire to complete
There is one Library Assignment
There is one Film Assignment
Finally, there is a Final Paper due on Week 7
Paper #1 A Sense of Mission See page 3 of syllabus
Paper #1 is due March 16 through March 18th.
This paper is an opportunity to get to know you and your writing style. I will return this paper with positive feedback, grammar feedback, and encouragement to keep writing.
All papers submitted by the deadline have the opportunity to complete a Rewrite to augment your grade.
This paper is primarily a way to help you relax about writing.

Keep a journal during the length of our course.
Write 5 entries per week, each entry is a page in length, and each entry should have a date and a title
There are 3 options for keeping a journal, choose one:
You may elect to write in a Journal of your choosing. I like spiral notebooks or compositions books, but feel free to choose something that feels right for you. Write your entries for the week, and then take a video of you flipping through the entries, and submit your video in Moodle—10 points.
You may elect instead to TYPE out your entries in a WORD document. Complete your entries, and submit your document in Moodle—10 points.
You may elect instead to read Natalie Goldberg’s excellent text on the value of keeping a journal. All writers keep a journal. You still need to keep a journal, but instead of showing me your entries, write a one-page reflection paper about the pages you read for that week. Divide the text into 5 segments.
More on Journaling
I honor the privacy of your Journal. I will only need to see you flip through your journal, or I will only glance at your WORD document, or I will read your one-page reflection. DO keep a journal. In order to support your journal writing, I won’t read your entries (unless you ask me to). Consequently, the honor system prevails. I will trust that you will keep a journal.
Feel free to TRULY enjoy your Journal writing. I cannot tell you how often students have found the value of keeping a journal.
You are a writer for the next few weeks. All writer’s keep a journal in order to experience the writer’s world and life as a writer.
Grammar Exercises See page 4 & 5 in the syllabus
You will use Writers At Work to complete these exercises.
There is a handout in Moodle that explains which exercises to complete. See if you can find it.
Read the assigned chapter, look at the questions, look at the answers to those questions (at the end of the chapter), then write a brief point about what you learned.
These are due as follows: Week 2—8 points, Week 3—7 points, and Week 3—5 points.
Small Paper on Writing a Paragraph See page 4 of syllabus-Week 2
This is a tiny paper, Small Paper #2, 1 page in length. I ask you to read an article about keeping a journal. You will select 3 ideas you liked from the article. Each idea comprises one paragraph.
This Small Paper #2-Paragraphs is due Week 2. The article is posted in Moodle. 15 points
Topic for Small Papers See page 4 under Final Paper and Week 2
Your will be forming a Final Paper consisting of at least 13 pages. Small Papers #3, 4, & 5 will form the meaning and bulk of your Final Paper.
It is CRITICAL that this Final Paper be currently, not a previously written paper, but MOST importantly, it must be a topic for which you have a passion. Choose your topic carefully.
Complete the Worksheet, Topic Analysis and Outline for Final paper. Due Week 2.
This Final Paper is made of:
3 small Chapters
An Introduction
A Conclusion
A reference page
3 Small Papers See page 4 & 5
You will write 3 Small Papers that will be called:
Chapter 1—your title (due Week 3)
Chapter 2—your title (due Week 4)
Chapter 3—your title (due Week 5)
These papers will comprise the most significant aspect of your Final Paper; Final Paper is due Week 7. These Small Papers are 3 pages in length.
Rewrites of Small Papers See page 4 of the syllabus
If you submit your papers on the due date, you WILL be invited to complete a rewrite on that paper. The Rewrite is due the following week after it has been returned to you.
Rewrites grant you the opportunity to earn all 25 points.
Rewrites give you the opportunity to learn grammar from your OWN writing.
For each small paper, I will give you a grammar exercise to complete from the Brief English Handbook. This is an individualized lesson aims specifically for you to learn a grammar rule from your own writing.
Final Paper See page 4 & 5 of syllabus
Your Final Paper will begin to be written beginning with Week 3. This is a fresh new paper. We will be writing an aspect of your Final Paper each week.
It is critical that the topic you select to write hold importance, passion, and meaning. The best writing comes from writing about something that matters.
Completing the Topic Analysis & Outline will serve to guide your work for this Final Paper.

You will need to insert 4 in-text citations in your Final Paper. This is done later, not now. In-text citations will have its own PowerPoint.
