Behavioral Group Therapy

Behavioral group therapy has some unique characteristics that set it apart from most of the other group approaches including:

Conducting a behavioral assessment

Precisely spelling out collaborative treatment goals

Formulating a specific treatment procedure appropriate to a particular problem

Objectively evaluating the outcomes of therapy - Behavior therapists tend to utilize time-limited interventions that are short-term and are aimed at effectively and efficiently solving problems and assisting members in developing new skills.

Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) groups are among the most popular treatments in clinics and community agency settings. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) principles and techniques are one of the most common CBT group approaches is based on. REBT practitioners employ an active role in encouraging members to commit themselves to practicing what they are learning in the group sessions in everyday life. Although what goes on during the group is valuable, consistent work between group sessions and after a group ends is crucial. The group context provides members with the time and skills that they can utilize in between sessions in order to become self-reliant and to learn acceptance of themselves as they encounter new problems in daily living.

Cognitive Psychodrama Group Therapy

Cognitive Psychodrama Group Therapy is a systematic method of collaborative group therapy. It is oriented toward in-depth personal exploration, insight, catharsis, behavior change and problem solving. Encourages expression, beliefs, and deep feelings. Oriented toward revisiting the past, freeing the individual from effects of the previous trauma and allows adjustment to the present and future. Deals with interpersonal conflicts as well conflicts within one’s self. Tests reactions and behavior to new situations within a group setting.

Traditional Talk Group Therapy

Generalized approach to assist others in group, more generalized and superficial but can focus on specific disorders. Not oriented to expression of deep emotions, deep catharsis, or problem solving methods. Oriented toward future situations and rehearsal of specific behavioral responses or approaches to anticipated situations. Oriented toward specific behavioral problems but not usually directed towards the past. Focuses on behavioral modification, skills, and training for social interactions. More indirect and thereby less exposing.

Mindfulness Group Therapy

Mindfulness-based therapies are well suited for group therapy sessions for psychiatry patients in general practice. Mindfulness has the benefit of being accessible to larger groups of patients after an introduction to mindfulness, these patients can practice it on their own. A practice review found that the benefits of mindfulness-based therapies decreased anxiety, depression, and reduced physiological distress. It was also associated with improved well-being; increased self-control; decreased negative affect; less physical illness; improved concentration, focus, and working memory.
