Douglas MacGregor’s Theory X & Y Management Concepts
Herbert Simon & Chris Argyris
- Simon came from field of public administration, Argyris came from field of psychology
- Both shifted concerns with structure to human behavior
- Argyris is critical of Simon’s “rational man theory” (one seeking a satisfactory choice rather than the optimal one) the description had limitations too many variables

Organizational Culture According to Edgar Schein

Post Modernism
- Knowledge is fragmented
- Claim that science and knowledge acquired are absolute
Issues of Gender & Power
- Many theories do not include a female perspective
- Thus rendering not complete since the issue of powerlessness and inequality are not discussed
Group Discussion
- Each group will receive the name of a local government agency along with a brief description of what it does and its mission statement. Members of the group should think of themselves as the new head of their agency, one who wants to shift the culture of her/her organization to a greater commitment to citizen service. Each group should discuss and then report to the class what it would do to try to achieve such a shift.
Implications
- Behavior is guided by images we carry around in our head
- You refine images based on experience
- Remember to manage well you must listen & communicate well ( remember class exercise, and give good directions)
- Good leaders evoke emotion in their subordinates (just how much emotion was evoked in class in response to the group)
