Powerpoint Outline for Argument Paper

This is an outline that was taught to me by a student and it worked out so well that it has become part of the class.  I'd like to see you accomplish this assignment in Powerpoint using six slides, but you can also do this on a word processor and just present it as six pages.  I will refer to each page as a slide from now on.

 

The requirements for this outline are below:

 

The outline should be based on one of the two topics assigned for your argument paper.

 

The outline should contain six slides. Each slide has specific instructions.

 

The slides should contain only complete sentences.

 

Each body paragraph slide should contain at least two sources (remember that your body paragraphs will eventually contain three sources when you turn in the paper).

 

Format:

 

Slide one

Introduction

 

Title of Paper

An introductory stat

An introductory quote

An introductory anecdote

(yes you need to find all three - we will comment on which one is most effective)

A thesis statement for your paper.

 

Slide Two

Body Paragraph 1

Topic sentence for body paragraph 1

Support 1 with a sentence after to analyze

Support 2 with a sentence after to analyze

 

Slide three

Body Paragraph 2

Topic sentence for body paragraph 2

Support 1 with a sentence after to analyze

Support 2 with a sentence after to analyze

 

Slide 4 

Body Paragraph 3

Topic sentence for body paragraph3

Support 1 with a sentence after to analyze

Support 2 with a sentence after to analyze

 

Slide 5 

Counter-argument and Refutation

Find a counter argument for BP1 then write two sentences to refute

Find a counter argument for BP2 then write two sentences to refute

Find a counter argument for BP3 then write two sentences to refute

 

Slide Six

Conclusion

Re-state your thesis.

 Write a five-line poem about the topic of your paper.  This should connect your topic to something more universal and emotional (poems usually do, YOU WILL NOT BE INCLUDING THE POEM IN YOUR FINAL DRAFT THIS IS AN EXERCISE TO GET YOU TO MAKE MORE EMOTIONAL CONNECTIONS IN THE CONCLUSION)

 It should take you around 5 hours to complete.  I know this sounds ambitious, but if done properly, this assignment will prepare you for an excellent grade on your final paper.

THIS IS WORTH FIVE POINTS!

I know this will put many of you over fifteen points, but only a complete outline with all elements will land you a full five points.
