Introduction
What is intussusception?

It is a disease that affects the intestines. When you have intussusception, a part of your intestine slides into another. When you have the disease, you may feel pain in your abdominal area and feel like drawing your knees towards the chest due to the pain experienced in your abdomen. You may also have a swollen belly, vomit, make grunting sounds and when you take a long call, you are likely to see your stool mixed with mucus and blood.

In many cases, the cause is unknown but in others, the following are some of the causes identified. Some growths in the intestines can cause them to slide into each other. The growth might cause folding of tissues in the intestines when the tissues catch onto the growth, as the muscles of the intestines move.
Some virus are associated with the disease as many children with intussusception also tend to have symptoms similar to those of flu.
Though common in adults, a tumor or polyp in the intestine may lead to intussusception.

How will I be treated for Intussusception?

The method the doctor advises for treatment depends on how severe the condition is. The age of the patient is also considered in choosing the method of treatment. Another factor that determines the choice of treatment is the general health or wellbeing of the patient.
The doctor will normally use the non-surgical method first. The doctor will first carry out an X-ray exam to detect the nature of the sliding of the intestines. One method that can be used to treat the sliding is the injection of air into your abdominal area to push the sliding tissues away from each other. The doctor may also inject a liquid into the intestines through the rectum to help the intestines return to shape. This process is called barium enema. If these methods are not effective, a surgeon will have to restore the intestines into the right position through a surgery which is normally very effective (Jain, 2021).

Based on the treatment method used, ensure you follow the instructions given by the doctor regarding medication, rest time, diet, among others. For instance, following surgical operation, there are activities you will b restricted from taking part in, until completely healed. Enough rest time is required to ensure you heal fully.
