Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)
“The Lady with the Lamp”
Caring nurse and a leader founder of modern nursing.
Theorist with more than 150 well-known publications on important health-related problems.
Promotes Health Reform.
Design one of the first versions of the pie chart (Coxcomb chart).
Nurse during Crimea war in 1854 where thanks to his work, the mortality rate on campaign hospitals went down in 6 months. Also, she used to make rounds with a lamp from there her pseudonym.
In 1858 was elected as the first woman member of the Royal Statistical Society.
Founded Nightingale School of Nursing at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London in 1860.
The Nightingale Fund financed multiples social project and the midwifes school at King’s College Hospital.

Her philosophy and teaching emphasize the importance of brain, heart and hands to create healing environment for patient’s body, mind and spirit.
Holistic paradigm with a humanistic approach to the person in their close relationship with environment.
Contributed to the creation of the holistic critical thinking.
Legacy
Nurses show up at bedsides as professionals, using the holistic approach to care the mind, body and spirit providing compassion, comfort and hope to patient’s and relatives.
Nurses are portrayed in a nurturing light having Florence Nightingale as the most iconic symbol.
The union between science and compassion is obvious, nurses wants to help people.

Environmental Theory
Nursing is “the act of utilizing the patient’s environment to assist him in his recovery.” (Gonzalo, 2021).
Meaning
Make the relevant modifications in the environment that help the patient's recovery taking into account each specific situation (case-by-case basis).
Nursing is more than follow doctor’s order, meet physical or emotional needs is also actively use of natural and artificial elements to help on healing process.
It is a patient-care theory.
Major Concepts on Environmental Theory
Nursing: Interventions to address the goal of put the patient on the best conditions for the nature to act.
Person: not specifically defined only in relation with their environment.
Environment: All that surrounds human beings is considered concerning their health state.
Health: Optimum state of wellbeing
