How does party affiliations impact climate change policy?

Party affiliation does impact climate change policies. If pro-regulation groups fund a party, then the party will support more regulations. If anti-regulation groups fund a party, then the party will not support a lot of regulations.

To determine if party affiliation impacts climate change policies, we looked at what groups (environment and oil & gas industries) funded each party and different polices created or rolled back by each party.

Based on our research it is conclusive that party affiliation does impact climate change policies. Our findings supports our initial hypothesis. The democratic party receives more funding from the environment industry, and generally backs regulations. The republican party receives more funding from the oil & gas industry, and generally are against regulation.

The Obama Administration (Democrat):

The Clean Power Plan focused on limiting the usage of fossil fuels/electricity to reduce emissions created by companies. While the effectiveness of the plan are not yet known it’s estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 32%. The plan has since been repealed under the Trump administration and has been replaced by the Affordable Clean Energy rule. Furthermore, as of 2017 the US has pulled out of the Paris Agreement.

The Trump Administration (Republican):

According to Harvard’s Regulatory Rollback Tracker, Trump has targeted more than 60 environmental rules.

From the melting of polar icecaps to the immense wildfires of Australia, it’s become prevalent that the increase of harmful emissions has slowly but surely begun ruining our planet. Leading us to question how party affiliations impacted the passing of climate change policies. Ultimately, Inspiring us to explore the difference between the policies passed during Obama’s and Trumps office terms.

What can you do to reduce your carbon footprint? Compost! Consumer food waste is food purchased but not consumed. Food wasted due to its imperfect shape, size, and color is responsible for 1.3 billion tons of produce in the landfills annually with a value of approximately $1 trillion (FAO et al). In the landfill, produce creates approximately 11% of greenhouse gases, according to the World Wild Life Foundation—equivalent to 37 million greenhouse gas emissions from cars.
