Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine both children's and parents' dietary practices and to offer proof of any potential parental influence on specific children's eating habits.

Description

This article examined seven papers on the subject that were extracted from Google Scholar and PubMed between 2013 and 2023. The findings were from cross-sectional studies and longitudinal studies. The parental variables that were extracted from the data include active guidance/education, availability, accessibility, restrictive guidance/rule-making modeling, and pressure to eat as well as rewarding food consumption, using food as a reward and rewarding with verbal praise. The eating habits that were looked at included eating fruits and vegetables, drinking beverages with added sugar, and snacking.

Studies have discovered a link between eating habits, weight status, and the risk of childhood obesity. The eating habits of children are influenced by both environmental and genetic factors. Since parents are primarily responsible for influencing children's feeding environments and eating experiences, parents appear to play a crucial role in their development. Numerous investigations have delved into the relationships between parental feeding habits and children's eating habits.

Assessments

Potential parental factors were identified from the systematic review of child promotive, parental factors and preventive food consumption outcomes; these factors were context-specific parental factors, and some referred to parenting practices as a moderating factor

Abstract

Author:

Among these, parental modeling, availability of food types or the control over their availability, and both favorable and unfavorable food consumption and cognition, were all consistently related. The literature review backed this up.  The review found strong correlations of parental influence with both child consumption of healthy and unhealthy foods. There is probability that children will eat whatever parents avail to them.

Conclusions

The quantity, quality, and feeding techniques used by parents have a significant impact on the diet of their children. Parents can engage in a wide range of actions to encourage or inhibit specific eating habits in their children. Food consumption in children has been demonstrated to be strongly correlated with some behaviors, including parents' own food consumption and availability of particular foods. On the other hand, some behaviors, like active and restrictive guidance, are only effective in specific situations; active guidance is more effective at promoting the consumption of fruits and vegetables, whereas restrictive guidance is more efficient in preventing unhealthy eating.
