Ethnic minorities report experiences of unfair treatment when they have criminal cases in delinquent subcultures. Common reports include issues such as racism and oppressive policing through actions such as frequent seraph operations, armed raids, excess surveillance and others. More convictions are also made for cases involving ethnic minorities. The representation of the ethnic minorities’ position in crime can be explained using the theory of left realism that follows that the ethnic minorities are more likely to commit crime even without unfair treatment by the police. There is also the Neo-Marxism view that argues that the ethic minorities’ high crime rate is as a result of social constructions and stereotypes by the majority population (Social class, 2018).
Young people criminal behaviors have been shown to be linked to the social class of the individual. The lower social class is associated with more serious traditional crime when compared to the middle and upper classes. The higher level of crime in the lower social class can be attributed to the poor living conditions that expose the young person to risky behaviors or parental neglects leading him to commit a crime. The lower social class also has limited access to resources and education that could keep them away from crime life. Theories explaining the relationship between social class point towards failings in the family and personal morality. Other theories suggest the reason to be the discriminatory practices of the criminal justice system that look down upon the poor as criminals from their poverty.
Criminal activities carried out by young people are treated differently when compared to those by adults. The young people’s crimes are treated as delinquent crimes that are committed as a result of various factors in the young person’s environment leading the person astray. With this outlook of the young people still as children the court proceedings and sentences given are also different to those of adults. The young people get to go through quicker court proceedings after which a short sentence is given. In court the juvenile offenders cases are heard by judges instead of a jury and are referred to as adjudication hearing instead of trials. The sentences to the young people are usually aimed at rehabilitating them into turning to good members of the society. After the young person has served his time and is fully rehabilitated, the crime records are sealed to avoid them affecting their adult life for example in search of careers. Serious crimes such as murder are however treated with equal seriousness as an adult (Office 2018).
Deviant behavior refers to the actions that differ from the accepted standards in the society. Gender has an impact in the likelihood to be involved in deviant behavior where the men will get involved more than the women. The deviant behavior can be seen to be as a result of our biological make up where the females have a higher verbal ability and memory skills than men. The lower abilities make men more aggressive and prone to deviant behavior. The cause can also be pointed towards the societal expectations of the man to be bold and face life head on while the women are expected to be humble and not compete with the men in dominance or who is better (Cordone, 2018).
