W-7Analysis of Ethical Leadership Style
Post#2 by Amanda Richardson - Analysis of Ethical Leadership Style
After taking the questionnaire in Northouse (2018) I discovered my core values were Duty Ethics and Justice Ethics. I received a four and three respectively on according to the evaluation of the questionnaire it defined my core values for ethics as duty ethics following a set of moral rules and doing what is expected of you when facing an ethical dilemma and focusing on fulfilling your moral obligations and doing your duty, and justice ethics as focusing on treating others fairly when facing an ethical dilemma and trying to make sure the benefits and burdens of decisions are shared equitably between everyone concerned (Northouse, 2018). I feel that this fits how I lead with my ethical values when I have been faced with dilemmas in the past.
Core values are strongly held believes and priorities that do not change and are anchors or fundamentals that hold constant (Huber, 2018). These are things that will influence your every decision even if you are unaware of it because they are your guiding light. As a future PMHNP ethical considerations will come up frequently and I will need to be prepared for them. It will be my responsibility to be an ethical leader as defined by Jambawo (2018) “Ethical leaders demonstrate honesty, fairness, integrity and respect and they influence people to act through principles and values that embrace ethical behaviour” (p. 998). Since I also have a desire to work with the IDD (Intellectual and developmentally delayed) most of my patients will also not be able to give their own consent so I will be working with a vulnerable adult population. This leads to more moral grey area as you must define what they are capable of doing themselves, and what needs to be decided for them for their safety. As their mental health provider, I will be one of the experts called upon to help make this decision, possibly through the court system. As a nurse leader I will also be leading the staff I work with as they do the same. As a APRN nurse leader I should play an integral role in promoting high standards of moral and ethical conduct for my peers and follows in mental health as we will be in a special position to influence others in significant ways, I will use my transformational leadership style to lead my team with ethical behavior as its base and continue to grow my emotional intelligence with attributes of positive morals and ethically sound base (Jambawo, 2018). Therefore, I will use the understanding that I gained from this questionnaire and add it to the emotional intelligence I have already developed to develop it further to expand and grow my ability to be a moral and ethical leader in my future role.
