1. The impression of this book.
A. I find the book very interesting and useful because it mainly deals with the Decision making, which every one of us make on daily basis. The author in a descriptive manner explains the mistakes the people make in decision making unaware of the consequences of their behavior and repeat the same mistake (wrong decision) without learning from them. The author through his experimental findings extrapolates that the irrationality in our decisions can be predicted and these predictions can be used in social marketing strategies, Business etc. This irrationality can be changed which further makes the way we live better.
2.The issues.
A.The fallacy of supply and demand:
The first decisions and impressions are imprinted in the minds of people. Arbitrary coherence comes into play when one buys a certain thing in the past and this serves as an anchor when purchasing the similar kind of thing again. The price range within that range is well accepted. This first impression comes from the MSRP or the price tags created on the goods(supply) and the willingness is created to accept these within that price range(Demand).
The effect of expectation:
Peoples expectations can influence their vision in the subsequent events. For example, if something is said that it is distasteful before it is tasted, the chances will be high to get the same outcome( distasteful). This may not come from their experience but their expectation is responsible for that outcome. Blind conditioning (No clue about how or what it is) might help better to get a true response. Also stereotypes can influence our behavior. For example, people asked to fill questions about elderly leave the place more slowly after completing the questionnaire compared to people who filled the questions regarding young adults. It depends on the state of mind and the way we view ourselves.
3. How is this useful in public health?
This knowledge is useful to design policies in public health in a way in which people get easily acceptable to certain things which promote their health, change the unhealthy habits and policies can be changed based on the predictability in the behavior of people.
