Has the so called “War on Drugs" declared by President Richard Nixon, made an impact in The United States? He ratifies many policies that sought to fight the abuse of drugs and drug trafficking. Unfortunately, the war of drug trafficking appears to have been lost. It has been compounded by smuggling of these drugs trough borders thereby making them available for the users.

Movement of narcotics in the U.S has been effected. The movement of narcotics has been facilitated by porous borders. Notably, border and its issues has been today a problem that many countries should look forward to solve (A Brief History of the Drug War 2). There are number of problems which have raised attention of many countries such as drug trafficking. The issues include smuggling of drugs and dangerous weapons; deaths, kidnapping, terrorism in nations through borders and many others. These borders have high number of crossings and therefore the border is guarded by high number of patrol agents which is still not adequate to patrol the vast border to prevent illegal entries. There has been concentration by the border control activity on big border cities which has also extensive border fencing. There has been illegal crossing which leads to smuggling of dangerous drugs and substances. As a result of increase in smuggling activities, US have waged war on drugs and terrorism leading creation of strong and effective surveillance and intelligence.

The use of narcotics in the U.S has been effected. The use of drugs has been liked to negatives effects on the users. First negative effect is that the use of marijuana increase the level of addiction of an individual, raise the rate of social evils such as crime, additional burdens to the health care system across the world through the required treatment or the addiction and the drug-induced accidents. Marijuana as any other drug is addictive and it remains the most abused substance within the major towns in different countries. Therefore, legalizing the drug will increase the rate of addiction by the government making the drug readily available for the users, and influencing the non-users to participate in the substance consumption. As a result, there will be a reduction in productivity and an increased in social evils because marijuana reduces inhibitions of a person. Secondly, education of an individual can be impacted either by the teenagers performing very poorly in school or dropping out of school because of the impacts of using marijuana (A Brief History of the Drug War 2). The abuse of the substance is majorly perceived in the public universities since the rule and regulation that the institution imposes to the student is not sufficient to prevent the students from taking the drug. Moreover, the abuse of these drugs can make the individual taking it to engage in experimentation with other drugs such as alcohol and other drugs as well as reckless participation in dangerous sexual activities. At a point when individuals are high on the drug, they cannot be accountable for their actions and decisions hence they intend to be involved in risky activities.

Thirdly, legalizing marijuana will make the state unable to control the level of its intake. For overall risks, the most comprehensive analysis to date ranks marijuana eighth out of 20 substances, producing more personal and societal problems than MDMA, anabolic steroids, ketamine, and various hallucinogenic drugs, but fewer problems than alcohol, tobacco, heroin, crack, cocaine, and amphetamines (Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience 75). The most individual will think that smoking the substance is a normal thing and they can do it every time they so feel like. As a result, increases the drug abuse and the government will be unable to control the individuals taking the drug. Therefore, with the knowledge that people can smoke the drug without being arrested, this will make individuals smoke the substance at any time and any place they feel like without considering the influence they give the young generations, as there will be easier access to the drug and even cheaper compared to now. The drug dealers will be at ease to grow marijuana knowing that they can never be arrested for that which will lead to the users of this substance engaging in other drugs.

Due to more attention being brought to the stop of drug trafficking, law enforcement began to crack down harder on people distributing and selling narcotics. The abuse of drugs has a major effect on the health of the users, especially on the respiratory health (A Brief History of the Drug War 4). The abuse of drugs may also affect the memory of the user. It impairs the judgment as well as problem-solving skills. Therefore, the user remains nonproductive. Also, when the user is under the influence of smoking marihuana while driving, they may cause accidents. Some of these accidents are fatal. Also, after one's memory and judgment is impaired, one is likely to commit crimes.

Due to drug dealers being caught and persecuted, drug flow on to the streets has declined (A Brief History of the Drug War 4). When the drug dealers are arrested and incarcerated, the distribution and use of drugs substantially reduces. The reason being the users will not have the supplies because the smugglers are persecuted and thus are unavailable to continue smuggling.

Drug traffickers in the U.S have already been embedded for quite some time, have found many ways to get drugs in to The United States. Borders are porous and there are a number of people crossing these borders. Due to ineffective border check, many drug dealers have managed to smuggle drugs within the United States. Unlike the 1960s or the 1980s, though, nobody was warning about the Communist menace near U.S. borders (Drug Trafficking, Organized Crime and Violence in the Americas Today 87).

People being afraid of limited amounts of drugs being distributed on to the streets, are causing them to buy more before shipments become scarce. The reason being the availability of drugs increases it usage. When they are readily available means they can be accessed easily.
