1. Describing the presence of and practices related to death and dying in various cultures.

7. Analyzing the psychological and philosophical foundations for dying found in the predominant literature and media of the day.

15. Exploring areas of thanatology that require further research.

16. Identifying the different cultural, sociological and religious perspectives on the meaning of death.

Summary of the article and songs posted to the forum by 11 am CST on Saturday, October 2.  This counts as part of your chat grade.

Chat/Google Hangouts Discussion:

Consider the following questions before entering Googles Hangout for the chat: 

1.      Why do you think so many lullabies centered around death in a hidden way?  Do you think lullabies may have been some of the first songs about death?  How did you feel about lullabies after reading about them?

2.       The songs you listened to were on different kind of deaths – many on a more personal level, one on killing, and one refers to 3 historical figures who greatly impacted Americans. Do you feel there were any hidden meanings in the songs? Why do you think there are so many songs about death, yet the United States is considered a death-denying society?

3.        Which 2 songs have similar themes?  What are those themes?

4.       Did you look up the meaning or inspiration behind the songs? Why or why not?

5.       Compare and contrast lullabies with the songs you heard or songs about death in general.

Be present in Google Hangouts at 11:00 am CST on Saturday, October 2 to discuss the reading and songs using the above questions as a guide.

Students will be graded on HOW MUCH they participate, the QUALITY they added to the chat with their comments, and a summary of the article and songs (due by 11 am the day of the chat).  Don’t just say you agree or disagree with another student but why or why not. Make sure your comments reflect that you did read the article and listened to the songs – specifics.

Your grade on this chat will be averaged with your grade on the two discussion questions, an article review, and another chat to count for 20% of your grade.
