Part 4: Demonstrate effective financial planning skills (SLO 4) – 50 points
Purpose:
Developing effective time management skills is critical to an individual’s personal, academic, and career success. The purpose of this part is to ensure you identify your habits related to your financial wellness and develop a budget for your lifestyle and personal circumstance.
Instructions:
From the SLO 4 block module content, identify how you’re currently spending your money for the duration of this SLO block. Be sure to track every source of income and every expense from bills, rent, school-related expenses, and other spending (like going out to eat or renting a Redbox movie). For example:
My Income & Expenses for the Month of _________
Source of Income |
Money Earned |
McDonald’s |
$400 |
Mowed lawns in neighborhood |
$100 |
Total Income: |
$500 |
Expenses this Month |
Money Spent |

$100.00 |
New shirt for a party |
$30 |
Gas |
$40 |
Total Expenses |
$226 |
Difference (Income minus expenses) |
$274 |
Then, take your expenses & categorize them according to your needs versus your wants. For example:
My Needs Versus My Wants

Needs |
Why? |
Wants |
Why? |
Cell phone |
Must get in touch with my parents or kids; in case of emergency |

Need to pay tuition so I can register for classes & get my education |
New shirt |
I have clothes, but I just wanted something new to wear Friday night |
Gas |
Need to get to and from work & school |
Finally, create a budget for yourself based on your lifestyle & personal circumstance. Try to use the 50-20-30 rule if you can! For example:
My Budget for the month of
Category |
How much I PLAN to earn/spend this month |
