Nursing is form of art that has different kinds. Before joining nursing school, I worked for an old lady in a home health agency. She was impressed with my work and kept complimenting of my compassionate and dedication to my work. She taught me that nursing is not about the work but how the work is being done. It is from her consistent encouragement that made me enroll for a nursing course.

Nursing school was not easy. The program is demanding but after all I learnt a lot. I learnt that nursing entailed so many things apart from giving medication to patients assisting them in their daily routine. I learnt the need for establishing a good relationship with the patient when you start giving them care.

I started working as an LPN, then RN before completing my BSN course. At this time, my passion for nursing had grown even more. When I was working as an LPN I learnt that providing care to a family member may be more demanding than when nursing a patient. Nursing is not only what we learn in books but involves completion of a full care strategy intervention (Hancock, 2020).

My definition of nursing is establishing a rapport with my patients and getting to learn their perception. I like asking my patients how they feel and what they think would be causing the feeling. This helps as a nurse to understand them better and examine their symptoms. I am able to examine if the symptoms are physical or emotional. Sometimes when a person is depressed they may be experiencing eating problems and also not drink enough fluids which may lead to illnesses like headache. When addressing such a case, it is advisable to avoid over medicating the patient. Such a patient should be given some Tylenol to reduce the pain as well as allocating the patient to physical exercises to promote relaxation drink plenty of water and ensure healthy eating. Generally, our bodies are made or broken by what we eat, drink and the state of our minds (Kerr & Macaskill, 2020). I always encourage my patients to ensure they eat healthy, drink lots of water and exercise regularly. Positive thinking is also crucial to prevent depression.

I have learnt that we are the voices of our patients but do not have the last word. In most case, we are more knowledgeable on healthcare than our patients. Patients establish trust in us before any medication, injection or any other procedure is given. Advice is crucial to the patients to inform them of what we think is happening to them and the procedures we intend to use. We should also incorporate ethical principles like respect, treating patients equally, kindness and autonomy.

Currently, I am working like an urgent care unit for adult and psych population. Tasks here are different from what I was doing in medical surgery unit, home health agency and as an acute care. I was used to taking care of different kinds of people and every care was impressive. I enjoy working in health field. Here, we teach our patients, stabilize them and also refer them to different specialists and department. It is a good opportunity to grow since I do not see the same patients every day. I got an experience working with patients of different ages. I enrolled for Family Nurse Practioner (FNP)-DNP program to learn more on nursing and how to assist my patients (Kerr & Macaskill, 2020).

DNP program will be very helpful to me. The course will equip me with the knowledge to be a great family nurse and be able to carry out research on various occurring issues and the role of nurse in the society. Some of our clients are home-based hence there is a need for understanding home setups to boost healthcare services. Evidence-based practice is crucial for everyday activities.

In 2019 when I pursuing my DNP course I took a theory course which made me realize that nursing theories makes nursing better in a great way. The theory of ‘Goal attainment’ which was formulated by Dr. Javier Garcia impressed me. Dr. Garcia states that nurses and patients have a common goal of improving patients’ health. For instance, when a patient in the clinic has different symptoms, I can tell the patient what I think we should do and let them decide on what they want. Allowing the patient to participate in decision making is a crucial aspect to avoid struggling to do a procedure that a patient does not want.

DNP program has taught me the need for cost efficiency for nurses. This information will be helpful for me as a nurse practitioner in advising other staff and student practitioners. I will advise them to use evidence-based practice when dealing with direct patients. I will be in a better position to answer different questions they would have in patient care.

Conclusion

Nursing is an art of different kinds and has different explanations. Nursing provides a fulfillment to both patients and nurses. As a nurse practitioner, I will be a voice to my patients as well as diagnose and treat them cost effectively and observe ethical principles all the time. I will be boosting my nursing skills through studying and engaging in evidence based studies to ensure that I offer the best services to my patients.
