Popularvs.ScholarlySources.docx

For this essay you must cite a minimum of three academic sources.

While popular material is written by and for anyone and often has a commercial intent, academic material is written for a much narrower group and has an educational intent.

Popular sources (for instance, magazine articles)

· are written by and for anyone

· cover general topics, often shallowly

· contain colorful ads

· are often biased to appeal to certain groups

· rarely contain references or documentation

· tend to be less authoritative

· are published more frequently (daily, weekly, monthly)

Scholarly sources (for instance, journal articles)

· are written by and for specialists and contain specialized language

· cover narrow topics deeply

· rarely contain ads

· attempt to be unbiased in their approach

· contain extensive references and documentation

· tend to be more authoritative

· are published less frequently (often quarterly)
