Student’s Post:

The DNP-prepared nurses are educated and skilled to provide population health services. DNP-prepared nurses are terminal degree achieved leaders, who are capable of population-based health service and advocate for population health initiatives. DNPs are prepared to evaluate trends and engage with local medical organizations and hospitals to identify occurrences of a particular health incidence. Moreover, DNP-prepared leaders have the capability to lead population-based health programs for disease surveillance to monitor trends to reduce mortality, morbidity and improve public health.

I am practicing in south Texas, which is very close to Mexico. Many of our clients are immigrants as well as migrant workers. The occurrence of an increased number of Tuberculosis here in the valley is concerning. In the late 1800s, tuberculosis (TB) was one of the leading causes of ill health and death in most of the world (TB incidence n.d.). With social and economic development, improvements in hygiene, incomes, housing, and nutrition number of TB cases and deaths started to decline in most industrialized countries. From the 1940s, the discovery, development, and use of effective drug treatments substantially accelerated these trends, with national case rates falling by up to 10% per year and mortality rates falling even faster. Countries that have experienced such reductions in TB disease burden now have only about 10 or fewer cases and less than 1 death per 100 000 population per year (TB incidence n.d.).

In 2020, 882 cases of tuberculosis (TB) were reported in Texas. This represents a decrease of 23.6% from 2019 when 1,154 cases were reported (2.1 TB incidence n.d.). The Texas TB rate in 2020 was 3.0 per 100,000 persons. TB can affect anyone but is more likely to be diagnosed in persons born in a foreign country where TB is prevalent, persons living with diabetes or HIV/AIDS, persons who abuse alcohol and other drugs, persons who live in congregate settings, people who experience homelessness, and health care workers.

According to the CDC, data tuberculosis affects adult men more than any other people.  in 202056% of adult men were TB positive Texas DSHS TB program (TB data and statistics n.d.). A multidisciplinary intervention to address the issue would involve assembling a team of specialists, including a nutritionist, case manager, psychologists, and human development specialist, to manage tuberculosis infection (Groseclose, & Buckeridge 2017). As a leader, a DNP-prepared nurse should take initiative to search for the current program to diagnose, treat and prevent methods. Each DNP is prepared to evaluate the gap of the present programs. The preventive method is the best way to reduce any infectious diseases. Therefore, the DNP-prepared leader should develop screening initiatives for immigrants who are at the clinic. Public health education has proven an important part in preventing infection. Particularly, the living situation of the immigrants has to be observed and should provide proper shelter. The environmental hygiene program has to have contended more and must have a periodic evaluation. As a leader, my role in workforce development strategies would be to design activities and coordinate multiple stakeholder groups to collaborate on program that is beneficial for immigrants and homeless people.
