Pop culture can be explained as a blend of several human perspectives and ways of doing things. Such perspectives include music, art, attitudes, behaviors, and slung language dressing code, among many others. Pop culture, also known as popular culture, consists of a set of opinions, facts and practices, objects, and beliefs widely accepted and recognized by society and perhaps whose essence predominantly remains prevalent in society in a given period. Pop culture and technology have been termed as two inseparable aspects of human life since they are evolving hand in hand with massive revolution and transformations in each of the aspects almost every day of our life endeavors. Worth saying is that emergence of innovations and new technologies have greatly impacted human social life to the extent that much of traditionally well-known forms of socialization and problem-solving mechanisms in the society has become obsolesce, old, and outdated as new forms of communication and human interactions has slowly gained access to the interior of human social life's (Beng Huat, 2012).
Given that Popular culture encompasses the societal ideas, beliefs, music, perspectives, attitudes on particular cultural issues within our environment as well as images of various cultures that are highly held and popularly recognized by the majority of the members of the society, Statistical analysis has found that Popular culture has been all along heavily influenced by the current innovations especially through the use of social and mass media. Importantly, the outstanding celebrity figures, music, related entertainment, movies, and sports, and news have been all embraced via the use of new technologies and social media. Besides that, the Internet, conjointly with integrated social media platforms such as Snapchat, Skype, among others, has come to be a significant influencer of pop culture (Kasbekar, 2006).
Traditionally pop culture was only emended on arts, fashion, popular music, dance, and literature. Pop culture has currently evolved gigantically to involve several aspects of life, such as doing business over the internet, relaying conversion virtually by people living in different countries, and perhaps deep interactions over deferent communication channels such as Google and Facebook among man other. Perhaps pop culture has been positively and negatively impacted by the use of technology, social media, and telecommunication at large (Beng Huat, 2012).
New technologies have led to the modern development of the music industry as part of pop culture. The music industry has been among the many entertainment segments that have grown tremendously as new ways of music presentation, production and performance have been introduced and perhaps out into practical use. Traditionally many people relied on the radios and radio stations to get new updates about entertainment in terms of music; in recent years things, have completely changed as many fans of pop culture more so music can use their devices such as smartphones get access to internet-based entertainment platforms such as YouTube and make live streaming of music concerts as well as getting instant feedbacks on particular issues regarding their request in the music industry (Kasbekar, 2006).
Intensive research has shown that the introduction of modern technological ways of music retrieval systems has greatly transformed and modified pop culture better (Fedorak, 2009 ). The use of the internet and website information has impacted music and perhaps opened new ways of easy access, sale, and subscription to one favorite music genre. Conjointly technology, such as social media and other social drivers, has played a significant role in changing the pop culture to accommodate many other new aspects of life than before the industrial revolution.
Notably, the internet and too much social media use have continued to grow more drastically, particularly in this recent era, when modern technology has been highly proliferated. Perhaps the use of Broadband technology on the internet has tremendously increased the rate at which the current consumers get access to music and other forms of cultural practices that are highly valued by the members of the society (Kendall, 2015). The convergence and expansion of this took place on both music distribution and sharing platforms and increased music playtime instead of a few decades ago when the pop culture expansion was only limited to humans' physical interaction in various functions. Equally important is that social media and computer-based devices like tablets have also increased the availability and sharing of pop culture-based aspects such as dressing code, dance, and interactions between the remodified human behavior towards each other.
Indeed, technology is changing every aspect of pop culture and human lives at large. Benefits presented by both new technological digital approaches and the use of social media have had great impacts on our society and the popular culture across the board (Fedorak, 2009). There has been a great change to the extent that society and the world are worried about controlling some of the impacts that have been proved to be of negative influxes on our popular culture. Social media has been among the key factors that have greatly influenced the speed at which pop culture has been witnessing many modifications since the commencement of applying and using new technologies in our society.
It should be understood that technology, more so social media, affects how pop culture members communicate with each other, their learning process, and above all, the manner in which they think. It has reshaped and helped society determine the best ways of interacting with each other daily as they conduct their business of the day. Social media has made it easy for learning as learners from various parts of the world can freely interact, discuss academic pertinent issues, and collaboratively solve academically related challenges. Additionally, the education sector worldwide has been transformed in a manner that the societal members more so students and teachers. Learning has been made to cheap and easy to access but only limited to individuals who possess and have the technical know-how on using the internet and social media for their own good. Learning has been impacted positively since social media platforms such as tweeter, email, and Facebook has provided a golden opportunity for learners to interactively and collaboratively share ideas, exchange views, and provide a quality conclusion of the various subject matter of their academic interests (Kasbekar, 2006).
Moreover, teachers can meet students virtually through online and social media platforms to share their guidelines, solve complex academic-related issues, and perhaps evaluate each and every student regardless of location (Beng Huat, 2012). Besides academics, social media has acted as the key source of varied types of information where members of the society can access both political, economic, and social life-related information. Many of the teenagers have been highly influenced by the use of social media both at personal behavior, mode of dressing, creation perceptions, and also the manner in which they use newly introduced forms of communication.
Traditionally popular culture dictated that females were to have a certain uniform easy of dressing with the same applying to their counterparts’ male gender. Through frequent sharing of images, various clothing, and dressing styles, many of the youths and a few old adults have totally changed their mode of dressing, Many young females have turned out to engage in poorly quality dressing modes in that they can carelessly wear clothes that partially cover their body while leaving a larger portion of the body seen by every person. Males have been too negatively influenced by social media posts as they have turned out to make their hairs look more of females, unlike the male gender of the 1970s, who strictly stuck to the by then expected code of dressing (Shaw & Dennison, 2005).
Other than that, social media has also changed the pop culture by influencing how individuals can share and communicate with each other. People around the world are able to share and exchange varied forms of information through the use of social media. Business entities can now communicate and advertise their brands through social medial platforms as customers can gain access to various websites, Facebook, and google ads that communicate on new items already introduced in the market. The business has grown through the expansion of pop culture to incorporate an easy way of interaction between clients and business people (Fedorak, 2009).
As mentioned early social media has impacted pop culture and its change in both negative and positive ways. Some of the pros of social media in the pop culture transformation contents include increased ways of individual interactions with people having different backgrounds hence easing intercultural exchange over the internet use. Secondly, learning has been made easy as students and teachers can share exam content, ask questions, get clarification feedback instantly, and perhaps engage collaborative learning process regardless of any individual's location. Business people can exchange business ideas over the internet using social media platforms, actively engage their customers, and deliver their services through social media means. In addition to that, members of society can now get daily updates on what is happening in various parts of the world, more so in politics and the fight against terrorism through frequent updates relayed through social media platforms (Shaw & Dennison, 2005).
Additionally, many people are able to keep in touch more often than not as social medial has made the world behave more like a small village that brings varied people together and shares common problems as well as discussing on the best solution to their challenges. Individuals are able to share various forms of materials such as documents, files, education contents like exams, notes, videos clip, and many more.
On the other hand, social media has negatively changed pop culture as the new generation has been completely detached from the traditionally known form of interaction. This day's things have changed; there is no longer face to face talk among the members of the society. Many have turned to the use of social media as the main way of communication and interaction. There is a significant reduction in social contact among many members, which has led to decreased communication and deterioration of human relations. People have devoted their time to serving others within social media platforms until they forget to spare their own time, an aspect that has increased cases of depression more so in youths (Fedorak, 2009).
Besides that, pop culture has been negatively affected in the sense that most of the youths have been overtaken by social media influence to the extent of making some addicts of the internet and social media, which has led to the emergence of a group of youths who are productively lazy and less concerned about their future life. , moreover, there have been cases of social media-related deaths among many youths who put much trust in unknown strangers only to note that they were killers for malicious motives. Social media can also affect schooling culture as it destructs learners from their core business. There is reduced privacy as many people are able to access ready, note, and even find you anywhere at any time of the day via social media (Beng Huat, 2012).
