There are some key elements for the use of deadly force by officers acting in self-defense. First, there must be proof that he or she was confronted with an unprovoked attack. Second, there must be proof that there was a threat of injury or death. Third, the proof must show that the degree of force that was used, was reasonable under the circumstances. Lastly, proof that he or she was going to be injured or killed unless he or she used self-defense.

Some arguments for AB 931 come from the California Peace Officers’ Association which states that the new law will pose a danger to both the officer and public safety. Also, will destroy the officer morale and likely increase the line of duty deaths. Seth Stoughton a law professor believed that AB 931 will lower training standards and will provide a less restrictive policy. However, on the other side San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon stated that the new law will improve the community trust and improve officer training.
