Policies and Procedures
Every organization has its rules and regulations that influence its way of business. Workplace policy is a statement that outlines a firm’s procedures, practices and systems that influence its business and covers every aspect of day-day operations including compliance with legislations (Tricker, & Tricker, 2015). In this regard, policies and procedures play critical role in establishing corporate values/culture and also helps create a positive attitude and mentality which create higher output in the long-run. As such, workplace policies are critical element of an organization as they are meant to articulate the corporate values believes and culture including the processes and systems that help framework the corporate expectations around each staff’s behaviors/actions. Policies must therefore be well written and are clear enough to successfully communicate the expected behaviors leading to wanted output (Tricker, & Tricker, 2015).
Firms often face various risks due to external relationships with suppliers and vendors and internal conflicts with the shareholders. In this regard, workplace policies help safeguard firms from external and internal conflicts mainly due to sexual harassment, workplace intimidation, fraud, and discrimination among others. Lack of appropriate and well-articulated corporate policies makes it very difficult to defend employee complains leave alone solving them (Tricker, & Tricker, 2015). It’s also critical to note that policies and procedures also help outline the corporate vision and mission while setting standards for staffs’ behaviors and performance. In regards to a public project such as volunteer, it’s necessary to have policies in place to ensure an effective decision-making framework that promotes integrity and farness when and if conflicts arise (Tricker, & Tricker, 2015). In general, policies and procedures reduce health and safety risks for both employers and employees.
While policies are important in any corporate setting, some or most staffs’ often resist change should new policies be put in place. It’s important to note that staffs’ are the ones who implement policies or procedures and as such, they must be willing and ready to on-board otherwise there will be conflicts. As such I will strive to ensure adequate communication in regards to reasons for specific policies/procedures. Communicating the why and how questions are one step to overcoming resistance to change (Harlan, 2020). I will also establish a detailed communication plan as opposed to just directing volunteers on what to do. In addition, I will outline the reasons for, and the benefits of the policies and procedures. It’s also important to delegate the change process to help minimize resistance (Harlan, 2020). As such, I will train my team leaders first; making them role models to the rest, and then mandating them with the responsibility of implementing the policies and procedures (Harlan, 2020). This will greatly minimize the resistance to change.
Therefore, policies and procedures help instill change by creating a corporate culture that is influenced by specific values and believes. Policies also help minimize conflicts by establishing a system of accountability and responsibility. As such, firms with specific, well-written and clear policies and procedures are often more productive as compared to those lacking the same.
