Description: The Nationalism of Modern China can be seen as multi-dimensional since the two Opium Wars from 1840 to 1860, and was further accelerated during the May-Fourth Movement in 1919 until the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.The development of Chinese nationalism can be divided as two-dimensional: the anti-imperialist nationalism since 1919 and the state-controlled patriotist nationalism since Mao’s China in 1949. Both types of nationalism are the focus on rendering the anti-foreign sentiment to the Chinese masses, such as the Japanese invaders and Americanism, in order to promote/maintain the Communist forces in China in early 20th Century. Why these two nationalisms in China received the support from the mass? What are the influences in Chinese society during the promotion of nationalists by the Communist forces? This paper is going to shed its light on the specific case of Chinese nationalism from a historical context and Chinese diplomatic relationship between Japan and the United States of America in 1919 and 1949, hoping for providing an understanding of the ascension of nationalism in modern China to the audience. Comment by Guoguang Wu: The framework is big. That would be good if you choose an empirical subject (student movements? sports? etc.) and base your discussion on that. Also, try to specify the framework of time period, rather than cover the long period from 1919 to 1949.
